Martin family lawyer known for civil rights cases
SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? When Benjamin Crump got his first call from Trayvon Martin's father last month, the attorney counseled patience.
It had only been two days since a neighborhood watch volunteer had fatally shot the 17-year-old, and surely an arrest was imminent, thought Crump, who has pursued several civil rights cases against law enforcement agencies.
Another day passed. Nothing.
Two more days passed. Still nothing.
"I believed in my heart of hearts they were going to arrest him," Crump said Thursday in an interview. "I said, 'Oh, they are going to arrest him. You don't need me on this.'"
More than a month later, there still has been no arrest.
But thanks largely to Crump's efforts, the case has stirred marches and rallies around the nation, merited comment from President Barack Obama, led to the resignation of the Sanford police chief and brought scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice into this Orlando suburb of 55,000 residents.
"When you have the president commenting on the matter and you have celebrities and politicians wearing their hoodies as a symbol of the cause that you're representing, and it has taken over the world's attention, this is overwhelming in a sense," said Crump, who was in Washington for several days of meeting with members of Congress and appearing on national news shows. "We've been pushing relentlessly day and night."
Crump's strategy for making the case international news began with a series of heart-wrenching news conferences in which Martin's parents spoke about their loss. Florida media outlets began to notice. Then, he enlisted U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown to help convince authorities to release 911 tapes, recordings that brought the case to the attention of national media. He's further ratcheted pressure on authorities by organizing a series of rallies and working with national civil rights figures such as Al Sharpton.
The push began not long after Martin's death on the night of Feb. 26. Martin, wearing a hoodie, was walking home from a Sanford, Fla. convenience store when he was spotted by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who called a police dispatcher to report Martin as suspicious. There was a confrontation, and Martin was shot. Zimmerman has told detectives he shot Martin in self-defense.
Martin's death raises questions about the role of vigilantism, racial profiling and Florida's self-defense laws. Under those laws, a person isn't obligated to retreat in a threatening situation. Zimmerman's father has said his son wasn't profiling Martin and that he isn't racist. Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic and his father is white.
Crump was first contacted by a cousin of Trayvon Martin's father. The cousin, a Miami attorney, was familiar with Crump's civil rights work in Florida. Before Martin's death, Crump was best known for representing the parents of a teenage boy who died after an encounter with guards at a Florida boot camp in 2006. The videotaped beating of Martin Lee Anderson attracted national attention and led to the closure of the state's boot camps for juvenile offenders.
Crump, 42, and his wife, Genae Angelique Crump, are raising two teenage boys who are the biological sons of Crump's cousin. The oldest is Martin's age.
"Trayvon hits home on many levels," Crump said.
Crump and his law partner, Daryl Parks, are Tallahassee-based personal injury attorneys who primarily handle wrongful death and negligence cases. But their everyday work often involves civil rights issues.
"Daryl and Ben look at things in a broader perspective," said James Messer, a Tallahassee attorney who serves on the board of the Tallahassee Bar Association with Crump. "While there may be a wrongful death issue, it involves, in their eyes, more than anything a civil rights cause ... (Crump) has a passion for issues that have something to do with civil rights violations."
Crump's advocacy on behalf of Martin's family has gotten the attention of established civil rights leaders. Both Sharpton and Jesse Jackson flew down to Sanford to participate in rallies and a meeting before the Sanford city commission.
"He has integrity, smarts and an uncanny ability," Jackson said about Crump. "He is not flashy. He is just kind of a basic, old, solid-thinking, country lawyer."
Crump gets the "country" part from growing up in Lumberton, N.C., a tiny town not far from Fort Bragg. His mother held down two jobs as a factory worker and hotel housekeeper. His biological father was a soldier at Fort Bragg. He was raised by his mother and her high school sweetheart who later became her husband. Crump regards him as his father. The oldest of nine siblings and step-siblings, Crump grew up in an extended family of cousins, uncles and aunts headed by his beloved great-grandmother, Mittie.
"She had a switch in her hand when we came home from school. She would ask what we learned in school that day, and she used that switch to enforce the importance of that question," Crump said of his great-grandmother.
Crump would spend all day every Sunday in Pentecostal church, often missing the chance to watch his Dallas Cowboys play on television. The influence of the church is visible in his public speeches when he often sounds more like a preacher than a lawyer. His interest in civil rights stems from attending segregated schools until he was in fifth grade.
"It was a situation to me, that I said, 'Why do people on that side of the tracks have it so much better than people on our side of the tracks?'" he said.
When Crump was in high school, his mother sent him to Fort Lauderdale to live with the man he regarded as his father so he could have a male influence and be exposed to the culture that the bigger city offered.
He attended college and law school and Florida State University, where he met Parks, his future law partner. In his personal statement for law school, he said his hero was Thurgood Marshall, the U.S. Supreme Court's first black justice. After graduating, Parks and Crump formed their own law firm, Tallahassee-based, Parks and Crump.
Crump dodges the question of how, and if, he is being compensated by Trayvon Martin's parents.
"You do it because it's the right thing to do," he said. "As long as you make your goal to do right and do good, all of the money and financial material stuff will come."

Why You Should Be Wary Of Some Online Dental Recruitment Sites
Increasingly these days when it comes to dental recruitment more and more people are heading online to find their next dental job. But whilst this can easily be seen as a new, faster and better way of tracking down the best dental vacancies there is a danger that people may confuse 'online' for 'better'.
For many years now high street dental recruitment agencies have been struggling to keep up with demand, as the world of dentistry continues to expand and develop at a faster rate than it has ever done before. With more demand for new treatments there are more opportunities for people looking for work within the dental industry, and more people choosing dentistry as a career.
As a result dental recruitment agencies have been overwhelmed by both the dental surgeries looking for new staff, as well as those dental professionals looking for their next job.
Many dental recruitment agencies have still been working on the same systems which they were using before the recent expansion in dentistry, and as a result have been struggling to keep up with demand. In fact not only have dental recruitment agencies not been keeping up with demand, most dental professionals who approach a high street agency looking to be matched up to suitable positions have found themselves waiting several weeks before the application is processed successfully and positions offered. This simply isn't acceptable.
So it is not surprising then that so many dental professionals have given up on dealing with high street agencies and instead gone online to find dental jobs.
But the problem is that for all the flashiness of their websites many of the online recruitment sites are merely masks behind which the same high street agencies are sitting. So whilst it may take you less time to fill in an online form than it does to head down to your high street agency, book an appointment, fill in endless forms and then wait, you are still likely to face two problems.
The first thing you could find when using an online recruitment agency that is powered by the same high street agency you've chosen to bypass is that you could be looking at waiting for some considerable time before anything happens.
The other very important problem is that of course you will be inevitably offered a very narrow selection of dental vacancies. This is because most recruitment agencies still operate closed loop systems, which means that they do not have access to any dental vacancies other than those adverts placed directly with them.
However, there is good news. Because it is possible to find a dental job online without being caught up with traditional dental recruitment agency problems. Just recently a new dental portal was launched which has nothing to do with high street agencies, and does not involve third parties causing delays.
Not only that, but because it's completely free to advertise, unlike the exorbitant charges normally incurred, an overwhelming number of dental surgeries are now taking advantage of this service, meaning that you can not only find your next dental job quicker, but you're also able to see a much wider selection of vacancies.

Boxing, swimming to benefit from expertise of Cuban coaches
By Avenash Ramzan
The Sport Ministry has secured the services of two highly qualified coaches from the Spanish-speaking country of Cuba to assist the respective local athletes and associations in the areas of boxing and swimming to realise their full potentials.
The two experts, boxing coach Francisco Hernandez Roldan and swimming coach Isabel Maria Couso Fals, were introduced to local media operatives yesterday at a press conference hosted by the ministry in its boardroom at Main Street, Georgetown.
The 46-year-old Roldan holds a Bachelors Degree in Physical Culture and Recreation and majored in Boxing for the High Performance Sports, while the 45-year-old Couso Fals has a Bachelors Degree in Physical Culture.
According to Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, while Cuba and Guyana have previously collaborated in different sectors such as health and agriculture, this is the first time that the two countries are partnering for sport development. While boxing and swimming will benefit during this initial exchange, plans are in the pipeline to have an athletics coach in Guyana as soon as the state-of-the-art synthetic track, currently under construction, is completed at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
?We are very pleased that we can have this arrangement in place where coaches from Cuba will be coming on a regular basis to Guyana to assist in building the capacity of our local people,? the minister said.
?We want to lift the quality of our boxing to a different level in Guyana. We feel we can do this a number number of ways. We have not been able to maximize the use of the Andrew ?Sixheads? Lewis Gym, and that?s exactly what we?re going to do now. With the Cuban coach coming on board, he will be permanently based at the ?Sixheads? Lewis Gym. We will be converting that gym into an Elite Training Centre so from all the gyms in the country that we currently have, we will be taking in the best boxers. Right now the gym is not fully equipped and the ministry has given an undertaking that it will add new equipment to that space so that all the necessary equipment needed for training our elite boxers will be provided.?
Dr. Anthony added that local coaches, referees and judges stand to benefit from training, while Roldan is expected to conduct several community outreaches to look at the possibility of setting up gyms in specific areas.
In terms of swimming, the minister pointed out that Couso Fals will be based at the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, where officials and swimmers alike are expected to benefit from her expertise. Courses for persons interested in coaching will be offered, while the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has formulated a comprehensive programme for the swimmers.

Video from our FREE Online Business Course www.myownbusiness.org Session 3 ? Computer & Communication Tools Question ?Do you recommend business owners use accounting software and why?? Ken Blake Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Topics covered in this video: Small business accounting, accounting software, accountants Transcript: Most business owners will realize some definite advantages if they get a software program to handle their accounting. The main purpose with accounting software is that it allows the easy production of reports verses having to sit down with manual records and trying to put together your reports. So there is not a lot of time saving when you use the accounting programs except when you get to the report level and that?s where the value comes in. As far as the type of program, what I always recommend is that people talk to their accountant before they jump into a program. It?s so easy to buy something off the shelf and then realize after getting back to the place of business that it might not be for the company. If you have an accountant that?s familiar with your business, there is a lot of software out there that especially designed for certain industries. So if your accountant deals in your industry, he can put you in touch with the software that would be specific for your company. This will allow you to bypass a lot of the set-up time and go right into some relevant accounting helped by the accountant who is familiar with the software. Even if your ?

World News - Reports: North Korea test fires short-range missiles
By Reuters
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea fired two short-range missiles off its west coast on Thursday believed to be part of a test to upgrade capabilities, said news reports published on Friday, quoting South Korean military officials.
North Korea has raised tensions in recent weeks by announcing it would launch a rocket to put a satellite into orbit, but regional powers are urging Pyongyang to drop the plan, saying it would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.
North Korea launched two short-range missiles believed to be surface-to-ship missiles from its west coast Thursday morning, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted government officials as saying.
"The launch is believed to be to upgrade missile capabilities and not related directly to the North's long-range missile launch," the newspaper quoted a military official as saying.
Another mainstream newspaper JoongAng Ilbo published a similar report.
South Korea's office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to confirm the reports, citing its policy of not speaking publicly on matters involving intelligence activities.
Reclusive North Korea has said it is merely sending a weather satellite into space, but South Korea and the United States say it is a disguised ballistic missile test.
The secretive North has twice tested a nuclear device, but experts doubt whether it yet has the ability to miniaturize an atomic bomb to fit inside a warhead.
The North has said the launch would take place between April 12 and 16. The planned launch, which has even drawn criticism from ally China, will mark the 100th birth anniversary of state founder Kim Il-sung.

Automotive Repair Blaine MN: 2 Components to inspect during ...
Automotive Repair Blaine MN: 2 Components to inspect during Automotive Service
Article by Discount Brake
Most people are aware of the major components of a vehicle that need attention during an automotive service, such as oil changes, tires, transmissions, and brakes. However, there are 2 types of components that often get overlooked until they fail, leading to an untimely and costly automotive repair. What are these 2 components? Belts and Hoses!
Your car?s belts and hoses are essential to the cooling, air conditioning system, electrical system, and engine. Don?t take the routine replacement intervals of these small parts for granted or neglected in an automotive repair, because they can fail at the most inconvenient times and leave you stranded by the side of the road. What is the purpose of belts and hoses?
* Timing Belt ? keeps the crankshaft and camshaft mechanically synchronized to maintain engine timing. Whether it?s the serpentine, V-belt or fan belt (the belts on the outside of the engine), they all transmit power from the front of the engine to accessories that need to be driven, such as the air conditioning, the charging system and fans. * Hoses ? Radiator and heat hoses carry coolant to and from the engine, radiator and heater core.
Key items that affect the replacement interval of belts and hoses are:
* Age of vehicle * Corrosion of electrical components * High mileage * Oil contamination * Tension (too tight or too loose) * Broken clamps
Some of the typical symptoms of wear and tear are if you start to see fluid leaks on your garage floor, the dashboard light flashes, or you hear squeaking noises coming from under the hood during start-up, or while driving. These are signs that you should schedule an automotive service as soon as possible.

Financing a New Car with No Credit Auto Loans | Auto Credit ...
Even with poor credit you may have the opportunity to finance something other than a low mileage used car
Vehicle choices
Lenders that deal with car buyers who are credit challenged sometimes offer the choice of financing a new vehicle.
We know because we?ve spent over twenty years dealing with auto shoppers with less than perfect credit here at Auto Credit Express. We even designed our website so that these same individuals can understand such issues as car loans after bankruptcy and FICO scores as well as today?s topic, the advantages of financing a new car even if you?ve experienced credit problems in the past.
Dealer differences
Unlike tote the note dealers where your job is your credit, the car lots that offer loans that can help you establish your car credit are franchised new car dealers. Due to the current economic recovery, the number of banks offering these types has increased to dozens of national, regional and local lenders and they?re offering a larger number of loans every month.
Since many of the programs they offer include the possibility of financing a new car and the dealers that offer them sell new cars, this means that in some instances, auto loan applicants might qualify for a new car.
And while the lending requirements for these types of loans are much stricter than a typical auto loan, there are still quite a few new car models that often qualify for these programs.
New car advantages
There are, of course, a number of advantages to buying a new car:
1.?? ?They typically come with a comprehensive new car warranty
2.?? ?They often come with free roadside assistance
3.?? ?There is usually the option to purchase an extended warranty to cover the entire loan term.
4.?? ?Buyers usually have a choice of colors and options.
The disadvantage
The biggest drawback to purchasing a new car is depreciation. Typical new cars will lose at least 15% of their value as soon as they?re driven off the lot. This means that most of your payments during the first half of the loan will be lost to depreciation. This means you?ll usually be ?upside down? in the loan for the first two and a half years of a five year loan.
But you can also reduce this problem by either making a down payment of at least twenty percent or reducing the length of the loan from 60 months to 48 or even 36 months.
The Bottom Line
Choosing a new car definitely has its advantages. They are more reliable and also come with warranties and other nice perks. To offset the issue of negative equity, you can either shorten the loan term or come into the loan with a down payment of 20 percent or more.
Also remember that Auto Credit Express helps people who have experienced credit difficulties find a dealer for their best chance at an auto loan approval.
So if you really want to get your auto credit on track, you can start now by filling out our online auto loans application.

JetBlue suspends captain after in-flight meltdown
Tony Antolino and Laurie Dhue, passengers aboard the JetBlue flight that made an emergency landing after the pilot had a mid-air meltdown, talk to TODAY's Ann Curry about the bizarre incident.
By NBC News services
JetBlue announced Wednesday that it is suspending the captain whose bizarre behavior prompted his fellow co-pilot to lock him out of the cockpit on a flight from New York to Las Vegas.?
Clayton Osbon, 49, ?has been a pilot at JetBlue since 2000, the airline's first year of flying. The company said a "medical situation" occurred onboard the plane on Tuesday but wouldn't elaborate.
Passengers said the pilot was yelling and acting unruly in the cabin after he was locked out of the cockpit. A group of passengers tackled the captain and restrained him until the plane landed in Amarillo, Texas.
JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said Wednesday that Osbon was taken off active duty pending review of the incident.?
Two passengers aboard JetBlue Flight 191 recounted Wednesday the dramatic and bizarre situation of the plane's captain leaving the cockpit, acting erratically and eventually being subdued. JetBlue's CEO, meanwhile, said the captain was a "consummate professional."
The captain "became increasingly agitated," passenger Tony Antolino told TODAY's Ann Curry, adding that several passengers grabbed the pilot, "tackled him to the ground" and sat on him.
Osbon, since charged with interfering with a flight crew and now getting medical care, left the cockpit, tried to enter an occupied lavatory and then became increasingly agitated when he couldn't get back into the cockpit.
"The first thing I saw was the captain running down the aisle," passenger Laurie Dhue said on TODAY, adding he was "banging on the door, saying 'Let me in! Let me in!' " Dhue credited the "brave people on board" for handling the situation, saying it was "literally like a scene from a movie."
JetBlue CEO Dave Barger, also appearing on TODAY, told host Matt Lauer that he knew the captain personally and said there were no signs that pointed to the in-flight meltdown.
"It was a true team effort at 35,000 feet yesterday," Barger said of the response by passengers and crew.
JetBlue CEO Dave Barger speaks out after a JetBlue flight made an emergency landing due to a pilot's mid-air meltdown.
Flight 191 was scheduled from John F. Kennedy Airport to Las Vegas, but was diverted to Amarillo, Texas.
On Tuesday, Antolino told NBC New York the captain began yelling about an unspecified threat linked to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. "They're going to take us down, they're taking us down, they're going to take us down. Say the Lord's prayer, say the Lord's prayer," the captain screamed, according to Antolino.
A JetBlue flight made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, Tuesday after the pilot had a "medical situation" and had to be restrained by passengers. NBC's Tom Costello reports.
John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.
Airlines and the FAA strongly encourage pilots to assert themselves if they think safety is being jeopardized, even if it means contradicting a captain's orders, Cox said. Aviation safety experts have studied several cases where first officers deferred to more experienced captains with tragic results.
In-flight outbursts by airline crewmembers are rare, but they do happen.
Earlier this month, an American Airlines flight attendant was taken off a plane for rambling about 9/11 and her fears that the plane would crash. "I'm not responsible for this plane crashing," the crew member said over the public-address system, according to passengers.?Passengers wrestled the flight attendant into a seat while the plane was grounded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport; the flight attendant was hospitalized.
In 2008, an Air Canada co-pilot was forcibly removed from a Toronto-to-London flight, restrained and sedated after having a mental breakdown on a flight.
The FAA is likely to review the unidentified captain's medical certificate ? essentially a seal of approval that the pilot is healthy. All pilots working for scheduled airlines must have a first-class medical certificate. The certificates must be renewed every six months to a year, depending on the pilot's age. To receive the certificate, the pilot must receive a physical examination by an FAA-designated medical examiner that includes questions about pilot's psychological condition. Pilots are required to disclose all physical and psychological conditions and medications.
Passenger Charlie Restivo thought it was clear the pilot suffered a medical episode. "I don't think when he got up this morning that that's what he was intending to do," Restivo told the AP. "Unfortunately, I just think it happened to him."

Does Your Business Need a Marketing Automation Make-Over ...
This week we have explored the use of social media and multichannel marketing strategies in B2B practices and one of the more alarming statistics demonstrates that more than 3 out of 4 small business owners fail to use any type of automation. Not only does this waste valuable time and money, but becomes a critical area of concern when combined with the fact that 60 percent of business owners also list lack of available staff as a major obstacle to implementing a viable social media marketing strategy. As a social media consulting firm, we have seen first-hand how much time, money and effort can be saved via the use of automation.
Benefits of Automation
Before exploring the data details, a quick description of the benefits derived from automation is in order. Social media marketing automation tools come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes; from complex and costly solutions used by the big boys of business to relatively simple solutions designed to solve specific problems for small business owners. All marketing automation solutions have one thing in common; the ability to positively impact revenue, reduce staffing costs, eliminate many long term liabilities, increase growth potential to nearly unlimited levels.
Automation Trends
Market automation has experienced rapid growth and adoption rates among big business entities as a way to cut costs and increase revenues. Unfortunately, small business owners have been reluctant to follow the lead due in part, to the misperception that automation is expensive. While the initial investment may feel a bit more costly up front, the long term benefits are clear; reduced expense and increase revenue. However, there is another reason for the adoption delay among small business owners; marketing companies. Believe it or not, many B2B marketing organizations have been slow to adopt automation as a product or service offering to their own clients; in fact, only 7 to 10 percent of marketing organizations implemented automation platforms during 2010. As a small business owner, clearly one of the very first steps you should taken when selecting a social media marketing agency is to determine their use of automation. With over 100 marketing automation vendors to choose from, every social media marketing agency has an opportunity to offer a wide range of automation solution to their small business concerns.
Automation Outcomes
The use of marketing automation is expected to increase to 50 percent by the end of 2015?just three short years from now?with the vast majority of this increase due to adoption of automation solutions by the small business sector.? As more business owners are exposed to the benefits of marketing automation, the demand continues to grow. The most sought after automation outcomes include lead generation (76%) and the ability to close sales faster (81%). This isn?t surprising since the combination of automation and marketing yields an average of (ready for this?) 417% increased revenue! That is an average revenue increase among business owners which have adopted automation solutions as part of a well designed marketing strategy. The benefits don?t stop there ? business owners that use automation as part of the lead generation process report over 450% increase in qualified leads. Once those leads are properly nurtured, they make 47% larger purchases than non-nurtured leads. Impressed yet? It?s not a mystery why savvy small business owners that understand the potential of automation are rushing to implement. Unfortunately, these business owners are still in the minority due to a basic lack of knowledge, know-how and access to automation options.
Untapped Potential = Enhanced Opportunity
As we?ve already seen, many small business owners are actually limited by their selection of social media marketing firms. You can be sure, our clients are fully informed about automation options and the incredible outcomes made possible. However, the untapped potential associated with the reluctance of other business owners to adopt automation is actually an enhanced opportunity for growth among those that do adopt the technology. Consider this, even among those small business owners that have implemented some sort of automation, only 36% ? roughly one out of every three ? actually use it to nurture leads. As dismal as that sounds, even fewer use their platform to help follow-up later in the buying cycle; less than 10%. In fact, experts estimate that among those which have an automation plan in place, more than 75% fail to use them to their fullest potential. ?When asked about the failure to fully utilize available marketing automation options, the top two reported obstacles included 1) people problems and 2)the process. This exemplifies the final critical consideration small business owners must keep in mind when option to adopt an automation protocol.
Build for Success
The potential of automation is clear; 450% increases in revenue, enhanced conversion rates and significantly higher sales data. But all of this is only possible if the people and process fit your needs. Among business owners that have adopted an automation platform, failure to fully implement all features remains a constraint to success. Proper planning and preparation is essential to the long term viability of the platform. Decisions as to whether to outsource or keep staff in-house should be part of the planning stage. Likewise, details on how to evaluate information and create a comprehensive feedback loop is essential to fully understanding the power of data derived from automation. Search for a social media marketing firm willing to listen to your goals, objectives and obstacles during the planning stage.

High fuel prices may keep U.S. travelers closer to home
Tony Gutierrez / AP
A sign shows gas prices as a driver pulls in to a newly opened QuickTrip filling station March 26 in Dallas. High fuel prices are expected to curb Americans' vacation plans this summer.
By Elaine Porterfield , msnbc.com contributor
Whether traveling for business or pleasure this summer, rapidly escalating fuel costs ??gas is now above $4 a gallon at many West Coast locations ??will cause travelers around the nation to cut back on trips, according to a new survey by the nonprofit U.S. Travel Association.
The survey found that of vacationers who plan to travel by car this summer, 54 percent said an increase in gas prices would affect their summer leisure travel plans, while more than 25 percent of business travelers said higher gas prices would affect their summer business travel plans.
The survey questioned 2,500 people around the country, and had an error rate of plus or minus 2 percent.
Furthermore, higher airfares due to rising oil prices will impact leisure travelers more than business travelers, according to the survey. About 43 percent of leisure travelers who plan to fly said that an increase in airfare due to higher oil prices would affect their summer travel plans; 25 percent of business travelers said their plans would be affected.
Carroll Rheem, research director for PhoCusWright, a travel research and analysis company, isn?t surprised by the survey results. High fuel prices have emerged as a threat to several segments of travel, she said, including long road trips and travel requiring flights.?
?I think it?s definitely a potential damper to summer travel and the travel industry,? she said.? ?It?s a little bit frustrating to watch. We?ve been waiting for this recovery, and as soon as economic factors improve, the price of gas rises.?
Though it?s a bit hard to predict at this point, tourism destinations only accessible by plane, like Hawaii, may well feel the pinch as consumers decide to stay closer to home when faced with expensive tickets, Rheem said. ?Travelers who might have flown, they?ll be grounded,? she said. ?Especially families who are buying four tickets instead of two.?
On the other hand, national parks and camping destinations may well see a boost this summer as families look for more economical vacations, she said.

Nancy White, a Washington, D.C.-based spokeswoman for AAA, said higher fuel prices will change some behavior on the part of travelers, but it?s hard to tell exactly how much.
?At this point, it?s still a bit difficult to pinpoint where gas prices will end up? by the summer, White said. ?From what we?ve seen from our travel counselors, the picture is more encouraging. We have 7,000 travel counselors at 1,000 branch offices, and we did a quick poll of them. They told us AAA members are not canceling trips. They are altering distances (driven), and perhaps number of destinations they go to. It?s still a kind of wait and see as to what the impact will eventually be.?
Their travel agents have noticed that consumers interested in purchasing airline tickets are closely watching fares but holding back on booking flights in anticipation that fares may come down, according to other AAA officials.
But don?t wait for any major airfare sales, Rheem cautioned. ?The airlines are very willing to cut back capacity rather than lower fares to ensure profits,? she said. ?They?d rather cancel a flight then run it half full. They just can?t afford to do that anymore.?

FILE - This undated and unlocated frame grab provided Wednesday, March 21, 2012, by French TV station France 2 shows the suspect in the killing of 3 paratroopers, 3 children and a rabbi in recent days, Mohamed Merah. Mohamed Merah grew up in one of the toughest housing projects of Toulouse, with his mother, two brothers and two sisters. At age five, his parents split up _ and he took that hard. He turned to a life of petty crime, landing in prison twice. How the young man described by one top official as a "little failure" went on to carry out France's biggest terror spree since the mid-1990s is provoking anguished questions in one of the West's most-seasoned terrorism-fighting nations.(AP Photo/France 2, File)

PARIS (AP) ? A video apparently showing a Muslim gunman's attacks on soldiers and a Jewish school was sent to the Al-Jazeera news network ? but not by him, French police said Tuesday, raising the specter of a possible accomplice.
Al-Jazeera on Tuesday decided not to air a video that seems to have been filmed from the killer's point of view and includes the cries of his victims. The decision came after President Nicolas Sarkozy asked the network not to broadcast it.
While French politicians describe gunman Mohamed Merah as a "lone wolf" terrorist, his brother is behind bars on suspicion of helping in the attacks and police are continuing to look for potential accomplices.
A French official close to the investigation said the video was not sent by Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman who was killed in a shootout Thursday after a 32-hour standoff with police at his apartment building in Toulouse.
Another official said the envelope sent to Al-Jazeera contained a Wednesday postmark from a large postal processing center for the area around Toulouse, meaning it was unclear exactly where it was mailed from. He could not say anything about who may have sent the video.
The first official said a technical analysis had concluded that it was not sent by Merah but did not indicate whether that analysis included fingerprints, DNA, surveillance or other data.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.
Merah was in his apartment, surrounded by police, from well before dawn Wednesday until he was killed Thursday morning. Police did not elaborate on why they think he did not put the package into the mail before then.
Prosecutors have said that Merah filmed all of his attacks, which began March 11 with the murder of a French soldier. Before the spree ended, two more soldiers and three Jewish children and a rabbi were killed, while another student and another paratrooper were wounded.
Police said Merah claimed the attacks and had told them he had links to al-Qaida, traveled to Afghanistan and received weapons training in the militant-riddled Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan.
French intelligence officials say they have found no sign of a link between Merah and al-Qaida or other international terrorist networks. Still, investigators say they are open to the possibility of accomplices.
Preliminary charges for complicity in murder and terrorism have been filed against Merah's older brother, Abdelkader, though no evidence has emerged that he took part directly in the shooting.
It was not clear if Abdelkader could have sent the video. Police say they first detained him as they carried out Wednesday's early morning raid.
"What we know is that it (the video) was reassembled. Things were added in. We don't know if the full sequence was in it. But it was not just the video as it was filmed. There was an editing process and additions made," the first official said.
Zied Tarrouche, Al-Jazeera's Paris bureau chief, said the video had clearly been edited, with religious songs and recitations of Quranic verses laid over the footage.
The footage appeared to have been taken from the point of view of the killer, perhaps from a camera hung around his neck, according Tarrouche, who described the video to BFM television station. He said they were a bit shaky but of a high technical quality.
"You can hear gunshots at the moment of the killings. You can hear the voice of this person who has committed these assassinations. You can hear also the cries of the victims, and the voices were distorted," Tarrouche said.
The footage was contained on a USB key sent with a letter to the Paris office of the Qatar-based television company, Tarrouche said. The letter, written in poor French with spelling and grammar errors, claimed the shootings were carried out in the name of al-Qaida. The second official said it was hand written in all capital letters.
The channel said the video was received from an anonymous source on Monday and immediately passed it on to French police.
"In accordance with Al Jazeera's Code of Ethics, given the video does not add any information that is not already in the public domain, its news channels will not be broadcasting any of its contents," the broadcaster said in a statement.
Al-Jazeera said it had received many requests by media to look at the video but it would deny all of them.
That decision came after Sarkozy, other French officials and family members of the victims had asked that it not be broadcast.
Tarrouche said the Paris prosecutor, whose office is leading the investigation, had also called to explain the consequences of disseminating the images. But Tarrouche said the prosecutor said he would not prohibit the channel from "doing its work as journalists."
Al-Jazeera was frequently used early in the Iraq and Afghan wars as a conduit for militants, including Osama bin Laden, to distribute taped statements. As the Iraq war progressed, many of these tapes included gruesome killings and beheadings of Western or foreign hostages, although the station edited out some of the grisliest scenes at the moment of death.
The broadcasts drew outrage, especially from the U.S. government. Over time, most militant groups opted instead for posting such videos on their own websites, where they were not subject to outside editing.
Meanwhile, Merah's father, who was estranged from his son and lives in Algeria, asked why a "strong country" like France killed his son instead of capturing him.
"Why did they kill him? ... They could have used gas, for example to take him like a baby," Mohamed Benalel Merah asked in an interview aired Tuesday by France 24 TV. The father said his son should have been taken alive and judged.
Sarkozy, in the middle of a tough re-election campaign, has announced a raft of new measures aimed at preventing the spread and incubation of radical ideas, including penalizing those who regularly consult websites that promote jihad.
On Tuesday, he said wanted to speed up the process of expelling radicals from France as well as prevent them from ever entering.
"Extremists are playing with our administrative formalities. Our job is to be more efficient," he said. "Preachers who continually target our system can stay where they are. We don't want them on the soil of the French Republic."
Meanwhile, another brother, Abdelghani, told a religious representative that the family wants Mohamed Merah's body to be buried in Algeria.
The funeral home was to make the request Tuesday with the Algerian consulate, and the body would be transferred Thursday if the authorization is granted, Abdallah Zekri, a representative of the Paris Mosque in charge of Toulouse.
Abdelghani Merah initially wanted the body buried in France, but insisted he would not attend any funeral of his younger brother, "who he considers a monster," according to Zekri.
Ultimately the brother gave in to his mother's wishes, Zekri said.

Arctic sea ice may have passed crucial tipping point
The disappearance of Arctic sea ice has crossed a "tipping point" that could soon make ice-free summers a regular feature across most of the Arctic Ocean, says a British climate scientist who is setting up an early warning system for dangerous climate tipping points.
Tim Lenton at the University of Exeter has carried out a day-by-day assessment of Arctic ice-cover data collected since satellite observation began in 1979. He presented his hotly anticipated findings for the first time at the Planet Under Pressure conference in London on Monday.
Up until 2007, sea ice systematically fluctuated between extensive cover in winter and lower cover in summer. But since then, says Lenton, the difference between winter and summer ice cover has been a million square kilometres greater than it was before, as a result of unprecedented summer melting. These observations are in contrast to what models predict should have happened.
Permanent alteration
Despite fears of runaway sea-ice loss after summer cover hit an all-time low in 2007 ? opening the Northwest Passage for the first time in living memory ? modelling studies based on our best understanding of ice dynamics indicated the ice cover should fully recover each winter. "They suggest that even if the ice declined a large amount in one year, it should bounce back," says Walt Meier of the US National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.
Instead, Lenton's research shows a permanent alteration. According to data from the past five years, the Arctic sea ice has not recovered from the 2007 extreme low. "The system has passed a tipping point," he says.
What caused the change is still unclear. Lenton speculates that the exceptional low in 2007 (pictured, above right) might have allowed the ocean to absorb so much heat that a lot of the thicker multiyear ice, which used to persist through the summer, was melted. Alternatively, the loss of ice may have changed air circulation patterns above the Arctic in ways that have similarly "locked in" the change.
Tsunami risk
Other glaciologists would not comment before seeing the details of the analysis, which have yet to be published in a journal. But if the findings are confirmed, they say, the existing models will have to be rewritten.
Elsewhere at the conference, Euan Nisbet of Royal Holloway, University of London, offered one particularly scary consequence of Arctic warming. He warned on Tuesday that warming ocean currents east of Greenland were melting ice in the seabed.
This could trigger landslides on steep submarine slopes in the area, unleashing tsunamis capable of hitting the UK, and releasing buried methane that could amplify global warming. Something similar happened off Norway 8000 years ago in a similar geological setting, Nisbet told New Scientist.
