Expedition 31 Flight Engineers Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers grappled Dragon at 9:56 a.m. (EDT) with the Canadarm2 robotic arm and used it to berth Dragon to the at 12:02 p.m. May 25, 2012. (AP) ? The SpaceX Dragon capsule left the International Space Station on Thursday and aimed for a Pacific splashdown to end its historic flight.

Astronauts set the world's first commercial supply ship loose after a five-day visit, releasing the vessel with the space station's robot arm. The Dragon slowly backed away from the 250-mile-high outpost, on track for a midday return to Earth, six hours later.

The targeted splashdown zone is 560 miles west of Baja California.

"Dragon smoothly undocked, moved out, released and on its way home," Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers reported via Twitter.

NASA's Mission Control quickly radioed praise to the six-man space station crew: "Great work, guys." A brown toy dragon decorated the flight director's desk in Houston. Within minutes, the capsule was outside the NASA-controlled safety zone around the space station and under the complete jurisdiction of the SpaceX team in Hawthorne, Calif.

Last week, SpaceX became the first private company to send a cargo ship to the International Space Station. And Thursday, it was on the verge of becoming the only supplier to return major items.

The unmanned Dragon capsule is returning nearly 1,400 pounds of old space station equipment and some science samples, a little more than it took up. Because it is a test flight, NASA did not want to load it with anything valuable.

The retro bell-shaped capsule was set to parachute down in the style of NASA's old Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecraft. A Dragon has returned from orbit once before, on a solo shakedown mission in December 2010.

Russia's Soyuz spacecraft for carrying crews also parachutes down, but on land, deep inside Kazakhstan. All of the government-provided cargo vessels of Russia, Europe and Japan, meanwhile, burn up on descent.

NASA lost the capability of getting things back when its space shuttles were retired last year. The space agency has turned to American private business to take over cargo runs and, eventually, astronaut ferry flights. Several companies are in the running for the human missions, with SpaceX in the lead given the success of this latest cargo shipment.

SpaceX's billionaire founder, Elon Musk of PayPal fame, expects to have astronauts riding his Dragons in three or four years.

Until then, the focus is on filling the space station's larder.

Assuming Thursday's entry goes well, the next Dragon supply mission will be in September. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is already at Cape Canaveral, Fla., awaiting launch.

Rival Orbital Sciences Corp. hopes to have its first test flight off by year's end, launching from Wallops Island in Virginia.

President Barack Obama wants NASA free of orbital deliveries so it can work on getting astronauts to asteroids and Mars.

Tips And Advice For Dealing With Personal Bankruptcy | sinimotor.com

Description

Don?t wait too long to file for bankruptcy. So many people suffer with debts, and sleepless nights for years. They could have filed for bankruptcy, and been in the clear by now. If you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy, time is of the essence. Make the decision so you can move on that much quicker.

Although filing for personal bankruptcy is one solution to debt problems, it is not the only solution. It is not necessarily the best solution. Before filing for bankruptcy, consider attempting to make payment agreements with your creditors. Credit counseling agencies will be able to help you work out such an agreement.

One of the biggest problems that people face when filing personal bankruptcy is they are in too deep before they seek help. They have borrowed against 401 K?s, IRA?s, and sold personal belongings. These things have unintended consequences. These loans are not allowable deductions in the eyes of the court and will not be used in the bankruptcy calculations.

One you realize you are in financial trouble and have decided to file for personal bankruptcy you should move quickly. Waiting to the last minute to file bankruptcy can cause a number of issues. You may face negative repercussions such as wage or bank account garnishment or foreclosure on your home. You can also not leave time enough for a thorough review of your financial situation, which will limit your available options.

Be honest when talking to your attorney. Your attorney is there to help you, and omitting details about your circumstances will not only make his/her job more difficult, but also may prevent you from getting your discharge. Furthermore, if you don?t disclose what you need to in your bankruptcy petition, you could be accused of committing bankruptcy fraud.

You should start selling things around your house and making budget cuts if you have filed for bankruptcy. Now is the time to start saving money and stop being reckless. You can focus on the future and get your finances in order, so that you can have a promising financial future for the rest of your life.

Do not attempt to pay off any of your favorite creditors before you file for bankruptcy. The reason is that all of your assets will be liquidated and each creditor gets their fair share. It is not your job to decide who deserves to be paid back and who does not.

Try not to put off filing for bankruptcy. If you need to file for bankruptcy, don?t procrastinate. Procrastinating may make legal matters more complicated. It may also cause you a great deal of unneeded stress. You need a clear head and a calm mind when preparing to file for bankruptcy. Don?t let stress complicate things.

A good personal bankruptcy tip is to take it all in stride. You have to remind yourself that you aren?t alone by having to file for bankruptcy. Many other people have found themselves in this situation and a lot of them are probably willing to offer you some form of guidance.

As noted earlier, the current economic climate keeps more people in a constant state of struggle, and many of them are turning to bankruptcy. If you decide that this option is the best one for you, hopefully this article has provided you with helpful guidance you can use to face your financial future and make positive changes.

Pat LaMarche: The Big Memorial Day Joke

A Vietnam veteran sits down next to an Iraq veteran and asks him, "How long have you been living in this homeless shelter." The Iraq veteran responds, "Ever since Memorial Day." And they laugh and laugh. Really, why shouldn't they? The joke is -- after all -- on them.

Before discussing the appalling treatment of U.S. Military active duty members, guardsmen, reserves and veterans, one should really understand what Memorial Day means. According to the website memorialday.org, "Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service." Well maybe that's why it's ok that our nation undervalues its active duty military as well as post service personnel: they aren't dead. Well, they're not dead yet.

It seems I'm not the only one who noticed the day doesn't have the meaning it should. But for different reasons -- after all -- I'm lamenting the disrespect shown to our living heroes while Memorialday.org bemoans the lack of honor bestowed upon the nation's fallen, "Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country."

Really? More than 11,000 Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury and the big Memorial Day beef is flag etiquette?

Perhaps the lack of respect for the dead is merely a natural next step once the living have been forgotten, mistreated and abandoned. Here's where mention of the 67,000 veterans that are homeless in the U.S. on any given night might be poignant. As would a reminder that 1.5 million more veterans remain "at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing." But really those numbers are so huge that they cease to have any meaning at all. I'd rather talk about one man.

I want to talk about Michael.

I met Michael at a homeless shelter where I worked. He's a Vietnam veteran and a retired Nurse. I've actually written about Michael before but I didn't make mention of what a mess he is on Memorial Day. Actually "mess" doesn't do Michael's Memorial Day mood justice, even cataclysm doesn't cover it. Still, Michael's ordinary. He's white; more than 85% percent of the U.S. soldiers in Vietnam were white. He was a volunteer; about 2/3 of them were. Of course the argument can be made that living in a time of conscription means that no one can technically volunteer. Signing up was often a way of arranging your own fate -- to some small degree -- before someone else arranged it for you. Too bad Vietnam vets like Michael don't have the same power over their destiny now that they are left with both physical and mental scars from the war.

I tried to see Michael this past weekend. And he tried to see me. He couldn't, the Memorial Day Joke got him and he was a mess. In his case that "A Vietnam veteran walks up to an Iraq veteran Joke" is particularly painful. See, the Iraq veteran in the joke is Michael's son Vincent. And Vincent is dead.

I played phone tag with the veterans Administration trying to find out how many members of the military have children who likewise serve their country in time of war. I never did get the number but anecdotally folks in the know seemed to think that the military is at least as multi-generational as other professions.

The problem with soldiering over dentistry, lawyering, construction work, or any other job is that the miserable legacies exacted by the former outstrip anything any other occupations might put a person through at work. In Michael's case, having his helicopter shot out of the sky and seeing his friends die should have been enough to motivate a grateful nation to take good care of him. But after sitting in a homeless shelter -- on any given Memorial Day -- it's hard to believe the nation is grateful at all.

Especially after guys like Michael give up guys like Vincent years later in Fallujah.

If the U.S. can't or won't pay back the fallen for their sacrifice, then it's time to admit the joke played on our military isn't funny and stop asking that the sacrifice be made in the first place.

hello, my wife has brain cancer for the 2nd time. looking for input ...

Hello, my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2001, underwent surgery, chemo, radiation. She survived and has lived a pretty normal life until a year ago. She started having trouble with her right arm and leg. Therapy wasnt working so her doc sent her for an MRI. The cancer was back with a vengance. She started out taking tremadar but it didnt help, she is now on E7080 a clinical trial med. She has lost her ability to do anything on her own. Can only use her left hand to work the remote for the tv, feed herself and grab a drink. She cant talk other than gestures with her hand and make a few grunts for yes and no. I am pretty much her 24/7 care taker. Give her baths, help her go potty. Pretty much everything. I have help here to assist with our daughter and things around the house. I used to drive an 18 wheeler but hired a driver to drive our truck so i could stay home to take care of her. At first it wasnt too bad, but here recently she has gotten worse and worse. We are thinking of putting her in a nursing home. I just dont know which direction to turn. what to do. Not many peopleto talk to about it. So I found this group thingy. Maybe I can get some input from someone who has been thru this. Or maybe I cant give some in return to anyone thats fixing to go thru this.

Android 4.0 Update SKIPPED for Sony Xperia Play

Sony has been furiously working for the past few months to provide 4.0 Android updates to the phones that it launched in 2011. It seems that mostly all the phones that Sony released in 2011 will be getting the update except for Sony Xperia Play.

Android 4.0 Update SKIPPED for Sony Xperia Play play200 300x289Xperia S, P and U are all set to receive their Android 4.0 OTA updates next week but Xperia Play has been excluded from that list due to stability issues. Sony has said that after it extensively tested the Sony Xperia Play (both in house and through its partners), they have come to a conclusion that the Android Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update will not be stable for the phone and particularly for gaming.

They have said that even the developer?s community and also advanced users of Android devices felt the same way and that is why Sony has decided not to release an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich for Sony Xperia Play.
Android 4.0 Update SKIPPED for Sony Xperia Play xperiagroup phones 300x157
It does seem odd that lower end devices will be getting an upgrade to Android 4.0 and not Sony Xperia Play but it is always believed that manufacturers of a particular device will never launch an update for it if they believe that it will not remain stable on it. People are still wondering how the Xperia Mini and Xperia Active will remain stable on the new Android 4.0 platform when Xperia Play can?t. But it is vastly believed that this could be due to the gaming feature of Xperia Play.

It seems that all versions of Sony Xperia (old and older) will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update sooner or later. There are still many ways of getting the 4.0 upgrade on Xperia Play but they will be through unofficial means. But if you want to use the Android 4.0 officially, then you are just going to have to upgrade your device. Although this is an option many people might not opt for as they buy the Sony Xperia Play so that they can play games on a portable device, a purpose which the Sony Xperia Play fulfills.

Labor unions given new protection for communications with workers ...

By Justin Snow
Justin@MarylandReporter.com

Senator Brian Frosh

Senator Brian Frosh

Beginning this fall, confidentiality privileges long enjoyed by attorneys and their clients will be extended to labor organizations and their members, raising concerns that these new protections could interfere with federal law.

One of hundreds of bills that came across Gov. Martin O?Malley?s desk for his signature earlier this month, the new law will protect union representatives from having to disclose information received in confidence from an unhappy union member during grievance proceedings.

According to the bill?s sponsor, Sen. Brian Frosh, D-Montgomery, the new law will extend the confidentiality clause applied to relationships between physicians and patients, psychologists and patients, clergy and parishioners, and attorneys and clients to unions and employees. Certain information disclosed under these relationships are protected as confidential by one of the oldest parts of common law.

First time for new protections

Much as in those protected relationships, communication pertinent to a criminal proceeding is not protected nor is communication that reveals the intent to inflict harm on another individual. Nevertheless, the new law remains a broad protection extended to labor unions for the first time in the state.

During Senate debate in March, Frosh disputed Republican attacks that the bill was unfair to business owners and should be extended to them as well rather than just unions and their representatives.

?This bill is not about protecting the union,? Frosh argued, ?it?s about protecting the employee.?

Frosh said a union representative is acting on behalf of employees and their grievances before management, which is not the case in a relationship between employers and their employees.

Supporters have said the extended protections will allow employees to utilize unions without fear that their words could threaten their job.

The bill was approved by the Senate and House of Delegates along party lines, with the majority of Republicans opposing it.

For employers, the new law, which will go into effect Oct. 1, presents a series of new regulations as to how they deal with labor unions and their members. There are exceptions to what information is protected when an employee takes a grievance to a union representative, including certain information a union is required to disclose under federal law. But no case has yet found its way before a judge for interpretation by a Maryland court.

Business group objected

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce.raised questions about the scope of the state law,

Although the law includes a ?savings clause,? which prohibits the state law from trumping federal rules, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce believes it will still conflict with federal law regulating a union?s duty to furnish information to an employer.

?The ?savings clause? only complicates matters and will force employers to file charges against a union, and thrust arbitrators, administrators, and courts into matters that are directly regulated by the [National Labor Relations Act],? the Chamber said in a statement explaining their position.

Gary Simpler, an attorney who focuses on labor law and is a partner with a firm that advises the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, echoed concerns that the state may be stepping into territory regulated by federal law.

?Generally, we?re not looking to the union to provide us information for our cases, but there could be instances where this statute would interfere,? Simpler said, adding that it wouldn?t be the first time the state has passed legislation interfering with federal labor rules.

Asked whether the extended protections would impact his practice, Simpler predicts the new law?s impact will be modest, but not nonexistent.

According to Simpler, the new protections could draw out legal proceedings and put employers at a financial disadvantage.

?There could be instances where the union does have access to information that they?ve obtained from the [employee] that would be important in helping the employer make an informed decision,? said Simpler. ?If they had the information they might have made a different decision or resolved the case much quicker than when they only learned about the information at the hearing.?

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria on Sunday strongly denied allegations that its forces killed scores of people ? including women and children ? in one of the deadliest days of the country's uprising, and the U.N. Security Council held an emergency session on the massacre.

The killing of more than 100 people in the west-central area of Houla on Friday brought widespread international criticism of the regime of President Bashar Assad, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame.

Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack and pointing a finger at the Syrian government, but Russia told Security Council members it could not agree and wanted a briefing first by Norwegian Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the U.N. observer team in the country. Russia has been Syria's most powerful ally during the uprising, and along with China has used its veto power to shield Damascus from U.N. sanctions.

The massacre in Houla on Friday cast fresh doubts on the ability of an international peace plan put forward by envoy Kofi Annan to end Syria's 14-month-old crisis.

The brutality of the killings became clear in amateur videos posted online that showed scores of bodies, many of them young children, in neat rows and covered with blood and deep wounds. A later video showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave.

Mood told the Security Council that U.N. observers at the scene now estimate 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters outside the council chamber. The U.N. later counted 49 children and 34 women among the dead.

The U.N. had earlier said its observers found tank and artillery shells at the site, suggesting the regime's well-equipped forces were to blame.

A council diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that after Mood's briefing, council members began working on the text of a press statement that would be along the lines of a statement issued Saturday by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Annan, his predecessor and the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria. Their statement condemned the "indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force" in violation of international law and Syrian commitments to stop using heavy weapons in populated areas. They demanded that the Syrian government stop using such weapons.

Activists from the area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels after protests Friday. Some activists said pro-regime thugs later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that narrative Sunday, painting a vastly different picture.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

The soldiers fought back, but didn't leave their bases, he said.

"No Syrian tank or artillery entered this place where the massacres were committed," he said. "The security forces did not leave their places because they were in a state of self-defense."

He blamed the gunmen for what he called a "terrorist massacre" in Houla and accused the media, Western officials and others of spinning a "tsunami of lies" to justify foreign intervention in Syria.

Makdissi did not provide videos or other evidence to support his version of events, nor did he give a death toll. He said the government had formed a committee to investigate and share its findings with Annan, who is due to visit Damascus in the coming days.

Throughout the uprising, the government has deployed snipers, troops and thugs to quash protests and shelled opposition areas.

A video released by the U.N. team in Syria on Sunday showed observers in Houla the day after the attack, meeting with local rebels and watching residents collect more bodies for burial. It also showed two destroyed armored personnel carriers ? suggesting that local rebels put up more of a fight than the activists acknowledged.

At U.N. headquarters, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin told reporters as he headed into the closed-door Security Council meeting that "there is substantial ground to believe that the majority of those who were killed were either slashed, cut by knives, or executed at point-blank distance."

"We have to establish whether it was Syrian authorities ... before we agree on something," he said.

Annan's peace plan for Syria, sponsored by the U.N. and the Arab League, is one of the few points of agreement among world powers about Syria's crisis, which began in March 2011 with protests calling for political change. As the government violently cracked down on the uprising, many in the opposition took up arms to defend themselves and attack government troops.

The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds more have been killed since then.

Daily violence has marred the plan since a cease-fire was supposed to begin April 12. The Houla attack made Friday the deadliest day since the truce was announced, and has cast a shadow over Annan's visit.

In another defiant move, Syria on Sunday denied permission for Annan's deputy to travel to Damascus with his boss, a senior Arab League official said. The rejection of former Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa was intended as a slap to the Arab League, which suspended Syria's membership and approved sanctions against it last year.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Annan's spokesman declined to comment.

The Houla attacks caused outrage among American and international officials that Makdissi's comments Sunday failed to assuage.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would summon Syria's most senior diplomat in the U.K. on Monday so the Foreign Office could "make clear our condemnation of the Syrian regime's actions."

Kuwait, which currently heads the 22-member Arab League, called for an Arab ministerial meeting to "take steps to put an end to the oppressive practices against the Syrian people."

Switzerland's Foreign Ministry urged that an international inquiry be convened, saying the killings "could constitute a war crime."

In Paris, the head of the exile Syrian National Council also condemned the killings.

"The kids of Houla are the kids of all of Syria," Burhan Ghalioun told reporters. "Killing the kids of Houla is like killing the kids of all of Syria."

Anti-regime activists scoffed at the government's version of events. One Houla activist said via Skype that the area had at most 300 fighters, but that none had more than rifles and that they often lacked ammunition.

"If we had anti-tank missiles, there would be no tanks left in the area," said Mohammed, declining to give his full name for fear of retribution.

Activists reported shelling, gunfire and arrest raids in opposition areas throughout the country Sunday as well as clashes between regime forces and rebels in a number of areas. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces killed at least 14 civilians, while rebels killed nine soldiers.

Activist claims could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating in the country.

Annan's plan calls for eventual talks between all sides on a political solution to the crisis.

The U.S. hopes Russia can use its influence with Damascus to press for a political transition similar to that seen in Yemen. In February, longtime Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh passed power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

U.S. officials say Russia does not oppose a political transition in Syria in theory, but has not agreed to specific terms.

Bonnie Carroll: Memorial Day: Honoring All Who Served and Died for Their Country

Each year before Memorial Day, the soldiers of the Old Guard place thousands of flags on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. The annual "flags in" ceremony honors each headstone with an American flag, the same national symbol that covers a service member's casket at his or her funeral.

All who serve and die are honored in the same manner at Arlington, with eligibility based on military service, not the manner of death. No distinction is made about which gravesite gets a flag and which does not -- whether they died in combat, during a military training accident, from illness, in a terrorist attack, or by suicide -- each grave receives an American flag -- standing proud and true honoring the life and service of a fallen hero.

This weekend, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) held its 18th annual National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for all who are grieving the death of a member of the Armed Forces, regardless of the circumstances or the geography of the death. This is the true spirit of Memorial Day, to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of all who have died while serving, all who stepped forward during a time of conflict to go where their nation needed them, to selflessly serve in the cause of freedom.

When you look seriously at the issue of memorializing our fallen military members, you find many inconsistencies that inflict emotional pain on survivors. Take for example, the family of Marine Lance Corporal Darrell Schumann, who died in Iraq in 2005 while riding in a helicopter that crashed in a sandstorm. Lance Corporal Schumann's father, himself a veteran, has spent years questioning why a citizen board in Virginia refuses to include his son's name on a memorial wall on the state capitol grounds that honors the military dead. The board says that because Lance Corporal Schumann was not killed by a hostile act, his name can't be placed on the well, even though he died while deployed in a war zone.

Lance Corporal Schumann was on duty for America the day he died, and he was in Iraq because of the military mission. Yet his family is denied the simple honor of having his name etched on a wall alongside thousands of others, including victims of similar military aviation accidents from previous wars. In January, the board indicated it would consider adopting a more inclusive standard, but still had no plan to add non-hostile deaths in the Global War on Terror to the memorial. The Schumann family and others like them, continue to wait.

Then there's Gary Farwell, who tried to get a gold star license plate from the state of Idaho to recognize his son's sacrifice for his country. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Gary Marc Farwell died in 2010 in a military helicopter crash in Germany that killed two other soldiers. He had served four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan flying Black Hawk helicopters with the U.S. military. Yet his application for a gold star license plate was rejected by the State of Idaho, because his son had not died in combat.

Are the deaths of military service members like Schumann and Farwell - who swore an oath to protect and defend this country, who were doing their duty at the time of their deaths - any less important or honorable? Do their families grieve any less than the families of those who die in combat? Is it right for society to honor people only for how their lives are taken - and not for how they are lived?

The Schumanns and the Farwell are not alone. While I was heartened to see the White House expand its policy in 2011 to send presidential condolence letters to the families of those who die by suicide while stationed in combat zones, the policy continues to exclude the two-thirds of families whose military loved ones die by suicide in other locations.

Army Lt. General Bill Troy was asked in 2010 about this as he honored a soldier who had died by suicide. He replied that when the military gives suicide victims a different kind of memorial service, "I think that you're adding to the stigmatization of a soldier who has a behavioral health problem. You don't mean to, but what you're doing is, you're making it look like it's his fault."

"We should be memorializing his service to the nation, his service in combat," General Troy said. "He's a volunteer, a member of a free nation who came and joined our ranks to defend this country and that's what we should be memorializing, not passing judgment on the manner of his death."

Who gets memorialized becomes even more complicated when you look at the numbers. From 2001 to 2011, about 16,700 American service members died worldwide. Though there were two wars under way, less than 30 percent of those military deaths, nearly 5,000 in total, were classified as due to hostile action or terrorist attack by the Department of Defense. That left more than 11,700 families grieving the deaths of their fallen service members in training accidents, suicides, homicides or illness, both in war zones and outside of them.

When tallying the number of Americans who have died at war, it's common for political leaders and others to combine hostile and non-hostile deaths that occur in combat zones. Nearly 4,500 Americans died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn in Iraq, and nearly 2,000 have died in Afghanistan. Nearly a thousand of the deaths in Iraq (934) and 420 of the deaths in Afghanistan have been classified as due to non-hostile causes by the Department of Defense. These are deaths that result from accidents, sudden illness, suicide, or homicide.

Today, all deaths in combat zones are memorialized with presidential condolence letters. But many of these fallen troops, like Schumann and Farwell, are denied memorialization by their communities or states because they were not "killed in action."

Both the Schumanns and Farwells have their loved ones memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery with grave markers and received presidential condolence letters. Yet these families are denied recognition by their communities and states because of how their loved ones died.

Many surviving families of fallen service members are hurt and confused when a government, community, organization or individual places greater value on one type of military death over another. These families wonder why service members who voluntarily joined the military to defend their country and put their lives on the line for it, are treated differently in death.

To define the value of a life by only the moment of its death -- robs the family and our nation -- of what each service member gave this country -- a life lived in service to country.

Thankfully, we are beginning to see some changes. Rural Purcellvilla, Va. held a candlelight vigil, attended by thousands of people, to honor Marine Captain Michael Quin as he journeyed to his final resting place. Captain Quin died in a helicopter training crash in Arizona earlier this year while preparing for deployment.

To see a community turn out to support the family of an American hero, who died not in Iraq or Afghanistan, but on duty in a training accident in the United States, shows that some communities are beginning to embrace a broader definition of memorializing their fallen.

Our nation honors each deceased military member with the same folded American flag, the same military headstone or marker and the same rendering of honors at burial. Their surviving families receive the same financial benefits whether the death occurs on American soil or in a foreign land or whether it is a suicide or an illness or an accident or a hostile act.

Memorialization should not be about where or how a death occurred. It should be about honoring the life offered in service to country.

A Real Good Deal ? Build a Free Website For Completely Free With ...

For the penniless, it?s quite hard to start and run a business. Of course, one needs a capital to gain profits in the business process. But do you know that you can start a business online-for free? You can build a free website for completely free with free domain name. How about that for a good start-up business? Let?s find out how it works.

Internet marketing can be an expensive venture for a new entrepreneur. When you opted to build a free website for completely free with free domain, chances are you were seeking for a good deal that will launch you to business success without having the need to spend so much. Presumably, this will only apply to beginners and small businesses. With a free website provider, you can create and customize your own website that will serve as your online business portal. You can use the website to display your goods like in a store window or a product catalogue. A business that renders services can also be promoted in a website.

To create your business website, you must register first to a website builder that offers a complete website service for free. This will save you from having to transfer from one platform provider to another in order to get it done. For example, one website builder can only provide you with free website but not the website hosting so you will have to search again. This is so hassle. A complete-service website provider will be give you a domain name (your own), a domain host, a website and a website host all in one transaction. You don?t have to worry about the whole process because the website provider will assist you up to the last detail.

When choosing a free website provider, always consider the quality of the websites they offer. In fairness to them, they are always trying to come up with good-looking and sophisticated websites to meet their clients? needs. But still, you have to make sure that your website will suit the kind of business that you have. Never use colorful skins, unimportant tools and unnecessary webpage features to your business website. Choose the website provider that offers an ad-free website to minimize unimportant details in every page.

To maximize the capacity of your business website, pick on a website provider that offers a generous amount of web space. Some free website providers have storage capacities of up to 5 gigabytes. You can make use of this space to build more complex web pages. Website builders that are capable of improving site traffic are helpful. If you know how to manage your site traffic, your business will surely benefit from it. Also, a free business website that has Meta tags support will have a great chance of landing the first page of a search engine.

There are more special features that you can avail when you start to build a free website for completely free with free domain name. All of those perks will prove relevant to the success of your business.

Change Desktop Icon Size in Windows 7

There are a lot of differences between Windows XP and Windows 7, a lot of which are pretty minor, but make you stop and think for a moment. One of those differences is how you go about changing the size of desktop icons. I have gotten so used to doing it in Windows XP, that I seriously could not figure it out myself in Windows 7 because it?s completely different.

There are actually three ways to go about changing the desktop icon size in Windows 7 and in this post, I?ll quickly go through the three methods. Goodness knows how you?ll have to change the size in Windows 8!

Method 1 ? Control Panel

The dialog I was looking for that is similar to Windows XP is totally unintuitive in Windows 7. In order to get to the Window Color and Appearance dialog, you have to go to Control Panel, click on Appearance and Personalization, then click on Personalization, and then click on Window Color.

win 7 appearance

personalization

window color

You can also right-click on the Desktop and choose Personalize to get to this same screen. The unintuitive part is clicking on Window Color! I never clicked on it because I didn?t think window color and icon size fell in the same boat! Anyway, that?s not all! Then you have to click on Advanced appearance settings.

appearance settings

Only then do you get the familiar dialog that we have in Windows XP:

?

desktop icon

For Item, you have to click on the drop down and choose Icon. Now you can adjust the size and also change the desktop icon font too if you like. Whew! What a process! This method gives you the most control over exactly how big or small you want the desktop icons.

Method 2 ? Desktop Context Menu

You can also simply right-click on the Desktop, click on View and then choose from Small, Medium or Large icons.

icon size

You only get three options here though, but it?s definitely quicker and easier than going through the control panel like shown above.

Method 3 ? Use the Mouse Wheel

If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel on it, the easiest way to change the desktop icon size is to press CTRL then scroll the mouse wheel! You can finely adjust the size smaller or larger using the mouse wheel. If you don?t have a mouse with a wheel, then you have to use method 1 or 2, there is no way to emulate the wheel mouse on the keyboard.

So that?s pretty much it! Not anything very complicated, but definitely not what I was used to with Windows XP. I?m sure I?ll be writing a very similar post for Windows 8 as the differences between Windows 7 and Windows 8 are even bigger!

IN THE LABYRINTH One Trail To Heaven music review by Conor ...

4 stars 'One Trail To Heaven' - In The Labyrinth (8/10)

Although a so-called 'best of' compilation seems better suited for a band or artist that has already achieved some degree of commercial success, 'One Trail To Heaven' is a damned good argument for newcomers to check out any of In The Labyrinth's three albums. Led and arranged by Swedish composer Peter Lindahl, the music takes the listener on a winding journey across Europe and Asia, often fusing different cultures and styles of folk into a beautiful mix. As ambiently-inclined as Lindahl's work tends to be here, there is a wealth of diverse sound and beauty to soak up on 'One Trail To Heaven'.

In The Labyrinth is another one of those artists I have come across that seems painfully underexposed. Comparisons could be drawn with Australian innovators Dead Can Dance; this music envelops several cultures, from Northern European folk to Indian sitar- exploration and Far East ambiance. What makes the sound so convincing is in the execution. The instrumentation is authentic and admirably performed, and the production crisp and professional. Occasionally, Lindahl will opt for a more conventionally Western singer-songwriter approach (as is the case with the fantasy-glazed 'Muscarin Madness') but the majority of this compilation is geared towards showcasing his more ambitious orchestrations. Hammered dulcimers, 'Chinese flute', and a myriad of Arabic percussion are some of the instruments heard here.

For a compilation, 'One Trail To Heaven' enjoys a healthy sense of flow, often to the point where I could be fooled into thinking this is a regular studio album. On top of a handful of preferred picks from the three albums, there is also unreleased material, exclusive to this compilation. For me, 'Moorish Rhapsody' is the highlight of this ordeal; a Celtic-Arabic folk fusion with warm, Beatles-like vocals not dissimilar from Arjen 'Ayreon' Lucassen's voice. The melancholic 'Over The Wall' is another favourite of mine, whisking the listener away to Nepal and a spiritual quest to Kathmandu.

Peter Lindahl's work is vast and deserves a much greater audience than he has thus far been given. Although this is technically not a studio album, 'One Trail To Heaven' makes for a perfect introduction to the music of In The Labyrinth. Within the course of an hour, many cultures are explored, and each leaves a gorgeous impression. The diversity does make for a somewhat scattered listen, but as compilations go, this is gold.

Linkin Park's 'BURN IT DOWN' Video: Watch It Here!

In the clip for their first LIVING THINGS single, which debuted Thursday on MTV, the band gets intimate ... with fiery results.

On the upcoming LIVING THINGS album, Linkin Park veer away from the political territory they explored on Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, and instead mine decidedly personal topics — relationships crumbling, trust eroding, faith failing. In a lot of ways, it is perhaps the most aptly titled record in recent history.

As proof, look no further than the first single, "BURN IT DOWN," which is full of lines like "I played the soldier, you played the king/ Struck me down, when I kissed that ring," none of which are about empire building or military service. Instead, the song is very much about the give/take dynamics of a relationship, and what happens when it all falls apart.

And the video for the song — which premiered Thursday (May 24) on MTV — follows in the same vein: There are no sweeping shots of battlefields or wretched politicians ... instead, it is a decidedly human thing: just the band, in a room, sweating their collective asses off and pouring their hearts into the music. It is a performance video pushed to the limit, and sure, there are a lot of digital effects added for good measure, but they're used only to highlight the personal flourishes of that performance — the intimately tight close-ups, the pained attention to details — shoot, even when they burst into flames at the end, you have to at least wonder whether they didn't just spontaneously combust ... it's that intense (and intensely personal) of a thing.

So after spending the better part of five years exploring the outer boundaries of what a massively popular rock band can get away with, Linkin Park return home with "BURN IT DOWN" and LIVING THINGS (due June 26), shifting the focus eternally inward. Not only is that bound to make their diehard fans happy, but it makes for a truly interesting new chapter in this increasingly fascinating band's career.

A Hundred Million Canadians? - New APPS: Art, Politics, Philosophy ...

An interesting call for increased immigration to Canada by Doug Saunders, who thinks that 100 million is the right population for Canada.

He points out something that most people hardly ever take into account. The US has a huge population. In fact, it has the third largest population in the world, after China and India. It has 330 or so million; the next largest country (Indonesia?) is only two-thirds its size. (Next is Brazil, I think, with fewer than 200 million.) And that is what makes it so alive. (I guess it may also be what makes it so dead.)

Saunders' argument is partially economic, but largely cultural:

It would turn our major cities into places of intense and world-leading culture

Canadians cannot build the institutions of nationhood and the tools of global participation using the skills, markets and tax revenues of somewhere between 21 and 24 million English speakers and eight million francophones scattered more or less sparsely over a area of land encompassing five time zones, several geographic and cultural regions, a dozen political jurisdictions and the second largest land mass on Earth.

Anyone who has tried to do culture, scholarship, public thought, entertainment or political thinking on the national level will recognize the brick wall of underpopulation. There isn?t a large enough audience, or market, to support such institutions at a minimal level of quality or scope. That?s why all of Canada?s major publishing houses are branches of foreign firms. . .

Our institutions of public thought are badly constrained. Canada could never have small magazines, such as The New Republic (54,000 subscribers) or the Weekly Standard (81,000) or Britain?s Prospect (40,000)

So: massive immigration along the lines of the early twentieth century? And where would that leave us culturally? A lot less in the image of our British and French founders, I bet.

(Incidentally, Canada's current intake of immigrants is almost twice that of the UK, a country with twice the population.)
