The UPS Store to offer 3D printing service in select San Diego locations (video)

DNP UPS to offer 3D printing in select San Diego stores video

Today, The UPS Store announced its plan to bring 3D printing services to the masses. The shipping company will soon roll out Stratasys Uprint SE Plus printers to 6 locations in San Diego to test out the new service; it'll be aimed at small businesses, start-ups and retail customers in need of a professional grade model to produce things like prototypes and artistic renderings. At $20,900 a pop, Stratasys printers aren't exactly the kind of gadget you'd purchase for home use, so their availability at UPS stores is a pretty major step towards making high quality 3D printing an accessible option for the common man. Though the company is starting small, it hopes to expand the service nationwide, provided that the San Diego experiment proves successful. For more info, check out the video after the break.

Panasonic KX-PRX120 offers Ice Cream Sandwich on a cordless phone

Image

It's easy to lose perspective on such things living in a city like New York, but people do indeed still have landlines at home. And really, in a world so dominated by the smartphone, why not get one that sort of splits the difference between the two? Granted, the Panasonic KX-PRX120 has the kind of specs that would make us shake our collective heads were it positioned as a standard handset, but as far as cordless phones go, it's, well, certainly more exciting than what most people having sitting on their kitchen counters. The phone has a 3.5-inch TFT touchscreen display, a microSD slot, a WIFI / Bluetooth interface and an optional answering machine. The device runs Android 4.0 and gives you access to the Google Play store, so you can use it to Skype with help from its front-facing camera. The KX-PRX120 should run around £169 ($259).

ADP: Private employers add 200,000 jobs this month

WASHINGTON?A private survey shows U.S. businesses created a healthy 200,000 jobs this month.

The payroll company ADP said Wednesday that companies hired in July at the fastest pace since December. And it revised up its estimate of the number of jobs the private sector created in June from 188,000 to 198,000.

Professional and businesses services companies added 49,000 jobs this month, construction companies 22,000. But manufacturers shed 5,000.

Small businesses?those with fewer than 50 employees?added 82,000 jobs.

"Job growth is consistently good?solid across industries," said Mark Zandi, chief economist with Moody's Analytics, which compiled the jobs report for ADP.

The healthy hiring suggests that the economy is handling tax cuts that took effect in January and federal spending cuts that began in March "more gracefully than I expected," Zandi said.

He noted that the drop in manufacturing jobs probably reflected cuts by defense contractors pinched by a tighter federal budget. A weak global economy has also hurt U.S. exporters.

The ADP report is derived from payroll data and tracks private employment. It does not report government hiring.

ADP's survey has diverged at times from the U.S. Labor Department's more comprehensive monthly jobs report. The department's employment report for July will be released Friday. It's expected to show that the economy added 183,000 jobs in July after adding 195,000 in June, according to a survey of economists by FactSet.

"The picture for the US labor market seems to have improved in the past couple of months or so," Annalisa Piazza, an economist at Newedge Strategy, said in a research note.

Zandi cautioned that recent job growth has come disproportionately in lower-paying businesses such as retailers, hotels and restaurants.

London?s struggling smaller theatres take ?Centre Stage? in new report

Union Theatre

London?s fringe and smaller theatres have long existed in a state of heroic precariousness, but as economic woes continue to bite, a new GLA report entitled ?Centre Stage? has outlined the problems facing London?s 105 most beloved smaller venues? and what can be done about them.

Six months in the making, the report found that almost half of small London theatres feel ?insecure? and one in five feel ?very insecure? about their financial future, with more than a third worried their venues are at risk of being sold or converted by developers as landlords take advantage of rising property values.

Worrying news, and with the theatregoing public?s wallets not getting any fatter ? and London?s landlords not getting any less greedy ? it?s crunch time for London?s smallest houses, with even powerhouses like Southwark?s musical-centric Union Theatre now fighting for survival.

The upside, though, is that ?Centre Stage? contains numerous suggestions on how to improve the lot of these small but perfectly formed venues, which have nurtured the talents of some of Britain?s finest and most successful actors and creatives.

Ideas included enlisting GLA support to help small theatres fundraise and market themselves more effectively, the creation of a better infrastructure for a successful fringe show to extend its life in a larger venue, for rehearsal space to be made available in City Hall, and for the Mayor to appoint a new ambassador for small theatres to bring the sector together and implement the suggestions.

Troubled times, though if BoJo pulls his finger out we could be on the verge of a major breakthrough for this most precarious, plucky and inspiring of industries.

Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior

7/30/13, New Orleans, LA. Research to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB), the foremost society for research into all aspects of eating and drinking behavior, suggests that feeding behavior and preferences may be shaped very early during development, even during fetal life.

Newborns of different species react to the sweet taste demonstrating facial expressions of pleasure, such as licking (tongue protusions) and thumb sucking. These "hedonic" responses are related to brain activity in regions that respond to pleasure and reward.

In this study, rat pups derived from dams that experienced undernutrition during gestation (intra-uterine growth restricted, IUGR) and controls received a droplet of sucrose solution or water at their first day of life. When compared to controls, IUGR newborns demonstrate an increased and more prolonged hedonic response to sucrose versus water.

We and others have previously described that, in humans, these IUGR individuals demonstrate altered feeding preferences at different adult ages, eating more sugars and fatty foods, and less fruits and vegetables. We also have shown that fetal growth correlates with the hedonic responses to sweet taste in preterm newborns born at 27 weeks gestation.

This becomes of importance when it is well established that poor fetal growth is associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases in adulthood (cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, atherosclerosis). Therefore, a persistent alteration in food preferences in individuals exposed to fetal adversity possibly contributes to the development of these diseases. Our animal model will allow a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in these processes.

"This translational approach permits us to study different systems that may affect food preferences in IUGR individuals, which will point out to targets for intervention planning", said lead researcher Roberta Dalle Molle. As more than 20 million children are born low birth weight annually worldwide, part of whom will become adults with the chronic diseases described above, the understanding of how early life may shape the individuals' eating behavior and preferences is of great importance.

Privatizing prisons a tough sell in California

Gov. Jerry Brown's solution to meet a court-ordered prison reduction is to shift low-level state inmates to county jails, but others say turning to private prisons is a good idea as well.

Advocates say state partnerships with private prisons, like the kind found in Texas and Florida, save money and reduce overcrowding.

"It makes sense for California policymakers to explore increasing the use of public-private partnerships given that many other states are saving on the order of 5 percent to 15 percent, sometimes more, and that they are receiving quality correctional services," said Leonard Gilroy, director of government reform at Reason Foundation, a policy think tank advocating privatization.

"In a difficult fiscal environment, it would behoove California policymakers to look at all the options that are out there. When you look at the experience of other states, private correctional services are delivering on cost savings and delivering on meeting the goals of the states' correctional systems," Gilroy said.

Another advocate for California prison privatization is local Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Hesperia, who authored a bill to extend the state's private prison housing contracts, which sunset on June 30.

Measures to curb crowding during the Schwarzenegger administration included sending hundreds of low-level offenders to private prisons out of state. About 9,600 inmates are currently housed in private facilities in Arizona,

Mississippi and Oklahoma. Donnelly said privatization should be expanded.

"When we want something done efficiently, and we want it done at the lowest possible cost, we privatize it," Donnelly said.

"The California state government has proven that they cannot operate our system efficiently, and this issue has been going on for over a decade. I think we need to copy the Texas public-private partnership that shifts a large part of lower level offenders into private prisons."

Donnelly's bill was killed in March by the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

Despite the effort, a Brown administration spokesman said the current private prison contracts will not expire under existing executive order, with 9,600 state inmates remaining housed in private prisons outside of California. The administration, however, hopes to reduce the state's reliance on out-of-state beds, said Oscar Hidalgo, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Prison privatization in California will remain a difficult nut to crack with heavy opposition coming from the powerful prison guards union and many lawmakers.

Loni Hancock, the Oakland-based Democratic chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee, said she supported the governor's plan.

"I don't believe we should privatize prisons in California," Hancock said.

"One of the key elements of the governor's realignment plan is to end the use of out-of-state prison contracts, including private prisons, and refocus state dollars on community correctional programs that would reduce recidivism."

Ryan Sherman, a spokesman for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, said private prisons are bad for both public safety and fiscal responsibility.

"They have a horrible track record as far as making sure facilities stay secure, with an escape rate 20 times higher than the California Department of Corrections," Sherman said.

Sherman said private prisons have higher rates of violence, higher staff turnover, less training, and the state retains all liability "when the (private prison) companies screw up and the taxpayers are on the hook."

Gilroy said the characterizations from the union are "conjecture and scare stories."

"The simple fact of the matter is, states and the federal government would not be using private prisons if everything that their detractors say was true," Gilroy said.

"Bad things can happen in good public prisons and bad things can happen in good private prisons. These prisons are not utopias."

Britain to get cash bonds for visas from 6 states

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Britain's Home Office confirmed Monday it will demand a 3,000-pound ($4,630) refundable bond for visas for "high-risk" visitors from six former colonies in Africa and Asia ? a pilot scheme that has brought warnings at home and abroad that it will damage trade.

Britain said in a statement Monday that it will go ahead with the pilot scheme despite the outrage, charges of discrimination and warnings of retaliation.

The statement sent by email did not say when the pilot would start. But it said it could apply the scheme in the future for all visas and any country.

"The pilot will apply to visitor visas, but if the scheme is successful we'd like to be able to apply it on an intelligence-led basis on any visa route and any country," it said.

For now, the targeted countries are Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Government data shows citizens of those countries applied for more than half a million visa applications last year.

Nigeria's government made a formal demand last month that Britain renounce the proposal as it was being discussed. Foreign Affairs Minister Olugbenga Ashiru called in the British high commissioner to express "the strong displeasure of the government and people of Nigeria" over the "discriminatory" policy.

Ashiru warned the move would "definitely negate" the two country's commitment to double trade by 2014. Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation and a huge market with its more than 160 million people. British government figures indicate 101,000 Nigerians were issued visas in 2012.

There were protests in India last month when British Prime Minister David Cameron visited, causing him to declare that a final decision had not been taken on the policy.

The Home Office said it hopes the bond system deters overstaying of visas and recovers costs of foreign nationals using public services like hospitals and schools.

Immigration was a key issue in Cameron's election campaign for his Conservative Party. Cameron has pledged to cut net immigration from 252,000 a year in 2010 to 100,000 a year by 2015.

One move that has come under heavy criticism recently has been a government campaign targeting people who overstay their visas. Billboards were put on two vans for a week in six of London's boroughs. Their message said: "In the UK illegally? Go home or face arrest." Leaflets with the same message will be distributed for a month.

The Home Office statement said the visa bond "is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain."

Almost all UK men with testicular cancer now survive

Almost every man in the UK diagnosed with testicular cancer is now beating the disease, new figures show.

Ten-year survival rates have surged by almost 30% in the past 40 years, said Cancer Research UK.

More than 96% of men treated for the disease today are still alive after 10 years, compared with less than 70% in the 1970s.

Although there is a slim chance of recurrence after 10 years, they are considered effectively cured.

Each year about 2,300 new cases of testicular cancer are diagnosed in the UK.
Unlike many other cancers, the disease strikes at a relatively young age. It is the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 49.

Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: "A clear success story in cancer research has been the drug cisplatin, which our scientists helped to develop. This is helping almost all men with testicular cancer to beat the disease and is a shining example of what we can achieve through dedicated research.

"For some types of cancer, the word 'cure' is almost a reality ? 96% of men with testicular cancer are now cured. But it's important we recognise the 4% who aren't surviving the disease, as well as the fact that we still need treatments to be kinder to patients in the future. It's only by doing more research that we can bring forward the day when we are able to beat all types of cancer."

The most common early symptom of testicular cancer is a lump or swelling in one of the testicles.

Martin Ledwick, head information nurse at Cancer Research UK, urged men not to ignore such warning signs.

"Although most lumps in the testicle won't turn out to be cancer, it's important you get symptoms checked out as early as possible as this gives the best chance of cure," he said.

"Get used to how your testicles look and feel normally and if you notice a lump, swelling or persistent discomfort then go and see your GP."

U.S. says JPMorgan manipulated market; settlement seen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. power regulator outlined its case of market manipulation against JPMorgan Chase & Co on Monday as industry sources said a final settlement on the issue should come on Tuesday.

Traders used improper bidding tactics in California and the Midwest to boost profits, officials said in a statement that brought to light some details of an extensive investigation.

Reports of that probe have circulated for months and a deal with the regulator could put an end to a distraction for JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon.

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff has found "eight manipulative bidding strategies" used by a JPM affiliate in 2010 and 2011, the regulator said.

JPMorgan declined to comment.

Two industry sources said a settlement over the trades could come as early as mid-morning on Tuesday. The bank is expected to pay around $400 million to end the investigation and the settlement could include other payments, according to reports and an industry source.

Monday's regulatory move did not contain any mention of specific traders or commodities chief Blythe Masters, who had been mentioned in media reports as having been singled out by investigators.

The FERC action is a reminder of the tougher regulatory environment commodity traders are facing, particularly banks, which have been under intensifying public and political pressure over their ownership of things such as metals warehouses and power plants.

JPMorgan announced abruptly on Friday that it was quitting the physical commodity markets, seeking a buyer or partner to take over an operation that includes ownership of three power plants, as well as a handful of large tolling agreements.

The alleged violations in Monday's letter offered little new insight into the bank's trading, as most of the details had already been laid out in previous FERC filings.

If there is a settlement, JPMorgan would close the book on a probe that dates back more than two years when California's power grid operator noticed the bank was using an "abusive" trading strategy that effectively forced the grid to pay for plants to sit idle, ultimately adding to costs.

The FERC has been particularly active this month. The regulator approved a $470 million penalty against British bank Barclays Plc and four of its traders for manipulating California power markets. Barclays said it would fight the fine in court.

For JPMorgan, a deal would also allow CEO Jamie Dimon to make good on his promise to resolve multiple government investigations and regulatory run-ins over the past year. The bank, which is the biggest in the United States by assets, is under pressure in Washington for its size and for its $6.2 billion "London Whale" loss on derivatives trades last year.

Samsung reportedly crafting 10- and 12.2-inch tablets with 2,560 x 1,600 displays

Samsung already has tablets on the market bearing almost any display size that might interest you. If a tweet from @evleaks is to be believed, Sammy has yet more slates in the pipeline, including its biggest one yet. Allegedly, the unannounced SM-P900 tablet carries a 12.2-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 screen (same res as the Nexus 10), an Exynos 5 Octa heart, and an S-Pen that would make it part of the Note family. Another device, known as the SM-P600, is said to cram that same resolution into a 10-inch display, and switches Samsung's chip for a Snapdragon 800. We'd be more willing to buy the rumor if there were pics to back it up, but it's rare for the source to be completely off the mark. Could we see these new tablets at IFA alongside a trio of Galaxy Note III models? Join us in a little under a month for the Samsung edition of Mythbusters.

Lea Michele returned to Twitter on Monday, sharing a heartfelt thank you with fans for their support after the death of her "Glee" co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith.

"Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support," Michele, 26, wrote. "Cory will forever be in my heart."

The actress attached a sweet, undated photo of herself and Monteith together, both smiling and wearing sunglasses.

The 31-year-old actor was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room on July 13 after a fatal overdose of heroin and alcohol. Michele was vacationing in Mexico at the time of his death.

Though grieving quietly alongside his family, the screen and stage actress reportedly took over much of the planning for Monteith?s memorial. Her rep issued a statement asking for privacy at the time, and for two weeks Michele was understandably neither seen nor heard from.?

She reunited with her entire "Glee" family for the first time on Friday.

"Ryan Murphy and Lea Michele gathered the cast, crew and producers of Glee, along with colleagues from the network and studio, to share memories and music in an emotional celebration of the life of Cory Monteith," a producer for 20th Century Fox Television said in a release.

The couple, who met in 2009 and began a romance in 2012 while working on the hit Fox show, were reportedly planning to move in together upon his return from Vancouver.

Many who knew them, including Monteith?s cousin Richard Monteith, believed they were on the path to marriage.

Just a month before his death, Michele gushed to Marie Claire Mexico about her dynamic relationship with Monteith.

"It's more interesting having a relationship with someone you work with because we get more attention because we play boyfriend and girlfriend on the show and we are also in real life," she said.

"But he is the best person I know, he has made my life so incredible, and I am so thankful for him."

Dana White doesn?t care about your comeback attempt, Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz is in the UFC Hall of Fame, but he shouldn't rely on that fact to get back with the promotion. The retired fighter has been talking about coming back to MMA. However, UFC president Dana White was not so keen on the idea.

"Who gives a [expletive]?" White said after Saturday night's UFC on Fox 8 fights. "Does anyone want to see Tito Ortiz in a superfight with who? I mean, Tito's lost every fight that he's had over the last three years or something. He won one fight in the last three years."

Ortiz floated the idea of a comeback over Twitter, but it's clear he's not going to get a fight back in the UFC. He has talked about an opportunity with Bellator, but White is right about Ortiz's lack of success in recent years. He hasn't strung two wins together since 2006.

Is Snowden about to become a refugee in Russia?

The former NSA contractor could walk out of the Moscow airport with temporary political asylum Wednesday ? much to the chagrin of the United States.

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden could walk out of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Wednesday as a documented Russian political refugee, according to the Kremlin-connected lawyer who's been handling his affairs.

"He should get this certificate [allowing him to leave the airport] shortly," the official Voice of Russia radio station quoted lawyer Anatoly Kucherena as saying.

Russian authorities have suggested it could take up to three months to fully process his request for political asylum. But Mr. Kucherena said a temporary document will likely be issued?tomorrow?that will enable him to leave the legal limbo of Sheremetyevo's transit zone ? where he has now been stranded for exactly a month ? and move to premises in downtown Moscow.

One straw in the wind that suggests Russian authorities may be leaning toward taking in the wayward ex-CIA employee, despite intense US pressure not to, is a timely round of statements from Russian government sources slamming the US for its "double standards" in dealing with Russian extradition requests.

The main thrust of Washington's appeal to Moscow has been that Mr. Snowden is a common criminal who should be handed over out of shared civilizational values, even though there is no formal extradition treaty between the US and Russia.

"Mr. Snowden ought to be returned to the United States to face the felony charges against him," United States Ambassador to Moscow?Michael McFaul tweeted?on Monday.

But in what looked like a coordinated pair of official blasts, Russian law enforcement agencies claimed that they have never experienced that sort of courtesy from their US counterparts.

"[Russian] law agencies have asked the US on many occasions to extradite wanted criminals through Interpol channels, but those requests were neither met nor even responded to," interior ministry spokesman Andrei Pilipchuk is quoted as saying by the Kremlin-funded, English-language news network Russia Today, which prefers to be known as RT.

And Sergei Gorlenko, head of the chief prosecutor's extradition office in Moscow, told the independent Interfax agency that "the United States has repeatedly refused Russian requests to extradite individuals, to hold them criminally liable, including those accused of committing serious crimes. We have been denied the extradition of murderers, bandits and bribetakers."

Officially, Russia has struck an ambivalent attitude toward Snowden since he arrived ? completely uninvited, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly insisted. On one hand, Mr. Putin has said from the beginning that Russia will never extradite him to the US. On the other hand, he and other Russian officials have frequently wished out loud over the past month that Snowden would just move along, and stop creating unwanted complications for an already troubled US-Russia relationship.

Many Russians have embraced the idea of taking Snowden in, largely because it would represent an impressive turning-of-cold-war-tables, in which Russia becomes a free-speech haven for dissidents fleeing the US.

But Putin has been visibly cold to the idea, perhaps out of worries that the ongoing Snowden situation could chill planned talks with President Barack Obama?at the St. Petersburg G20 summit that's barely a month away, or even prompt a US-led boycott of the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics, as at least one US senator has suggested.

One piece of the puzzle regarding official Russia's attitude toward Snowden concerns the role of the lawyer, Mr. Kucherena, who has apparently enjoyed almost unrestricted access to his client in the extraterritorial no-man's land of Sheremetyevo's transit zone.

Kucherena is chairman of the law enforcement commission in Russia's Public Chamber, a semi-official assembly of Kremlin-approved civil society groups and a prominent Moscow lawyer. The Kremlin-funded RT network, which has been able to talk extensively with Kucherena,?has posted a thumbnail biography of him.

But other analysts suggest Kucherena may be part of a Kremlin plan to admit Snowden to Russia, but keep him boxed in and under tight control of Russian security services.???

In other words, Snowden may successfully leap from the frying pan of Sheremetyevo's sterile transit zone, but it remains to be seen where he will land.

Have 3GS... whats the latest iOS with Untethered Jailbreak?

Hey guys, I have an old iPhone 3GS

3GS specs:
- iOS 4.3.3 (8J2)
- Model MC133LL
- Serial: 32123XXU3NR
- Moden: 06.15.00

I use it as a headless music player controlled by Veency (VNC Server) and nothing else, i dont care for any phone features, etc... just need it to run Pandora, Slacker, iPod, and Veency (via Cydia) reliably 24/7

its been getting kind of laggy recently and I think it needs a reset and I though I might as well update to a more recent version of iOS (something thats old enough to have an untethered jailbreak so I dont need to worry about restarting and I have heard the most recent iOS versions do not run well on older hardware)

So I am pretty much asking what I should do here... what version of iOS is best in my situation and whats the best method of getting it on there?

Billy Crystal talks 'Monsters University' (interview)

When Billy Crystal was pitched a prequel to the Pixar hit ?Monsters, Inc.,' he didn't have to think twice about coming aboard. The first movie not only grossed $290 million, making it one of the biggest hits of Crystal's career, but playing walking eyeball Mike Wazowski was also one of the actor's most enjoyable assignments.

?Mike is fearless so he's my favorite character I've ever played in anything I've done,' says Crystal, 65. ?I've really missed doing him.'

Pixar missed the ?Monsters' hitmakers too. So, a dozen years after ?Monsters, Inc.' debuted, the company is releasing ?Monsters University,' a prequel that checks in with Mike and his blue furball buddy Sully (John Goodman) when they're students at the School of Scaring.

In many ways, ?Monsters University' is a typical college movie, except with a distinctive Pixar-esque touch. There's fraternity pranks, rivalries with other schools and run-ins with the discipline-obsessed Dean (Helen Mirren).

?It was so much fun to revisit Mike and Sully at this time in their lives,' says Crystal. ?It was such a brilliant idea to put them into that time period where they're about to become who they're going to become. That's what was so interesting to me.'

Crystal appreciated the attention to detail paid by the animators tasked with bringing the younger Mike Wazowski to life.

?The first day reported to work together, they showed us renderings of the guys,' said Crystal. ?We just started laughing because oh, sure, they made us look younger ... Sully's a little trimmer and a little slimmer. has this retainer, but there's a little more youth in the eye. And they just carrythemselves differently...it's just subtle, but it's there.'

Traditionally, when it comes time for actors to record their performances, they work alone in the sound booth. But, in the case of the ?Monsters' movies, Crystal and Goodman have always toiled side by side.

It's a method that allows them to riff off each other and create a one-of-a-kind dynamic between Sully, a natural scare machine, and Mike, who tends to overthink scaring.

?I love , and playing off of him is phenomenal,' says Crystal. ?When we work together in the studio, we're not just reading lines, we're performing them, and we feel them. I think that's why their relationship on screen is really great because it's a real thing.'

Asked what gives him a bad case of the scares, Crystal names two things: ?Psycho' and his Aunt Shelia.

?Mr. Hitchcock knew what he was doing,' says Crystal. ?To this day, it's still a terrifying movie. It's the music and the lighting and the . It's all of that. It's genius, just genius.'

And Aunt Shelia?
?Aunt Sheila was terrifying because she'd put a napkin in her mouth, and go, `You've got something on your face, dear! Let me just scratch that off your face!'

When he was making ?Monsters University,' Crystal flashed back to his own college days. Growing up, he could always make his folks and his friends laugh but after he graduated from Long Island's Long Beach High School in 1965, he opted to attend Marshall University in West Virginia on a baseball scholarship before winding up taking classes at Nassau Community College.

He eventually became a film major at New York University and graduated in 1970 from the college's Tisch School of the Arts.

?I have to admit that, in college, I was a little bit of a misfit,' says Crystal who's been married to wife Janice for 43 years. ?I'm still not sure why I became a directing major when I was really an actor and a comedian but there was something that drew me to . I had made a few films on my own, and I loved it.

?But I felt like I was a misfit, in a way, and out of it because all those other people in my class ? Oliver Stone, Christopher Guest, Mike McKean - were film people. Our professor was Marty Scorsese. It was 1968- 1970, he was an intense guy with long hair, a big beard and granny glasses.

?Marty was a graduate student at the time but we had to call him Mr. Scorsese, and I still call him that when I see him because he gave me a C. ?

After graduation, Crystal found his true calling when he began performing stand-up at such New York nightspots as The Improv and Catch A Rising Star.

?It's like being a gym rat but you're a theater rat and then that becomes your fraternity house,' said Crystal. ?That becomes your extended family. I still see a lot of those people to this day because they owe me money. No, seriously, that's when became my thing.'

In ?Monsters University,' Mike and Sully go through a similar transformation when they discover exactly what they're good at.

?In this movie, they find out who they are,' said Crystal. ?That's the most important element of this movie to me. Mike has a dream, and the dream may not work out, and then he has to readjust and

recalibrate. He does that with the help of his friend, who tells him who he thinks he is, and he starts to

believe it himself.?
Crystal's career took off in earnest after he landed the role of Jodi Dallas on TV's ?Soap.' Playing one of the first homosexual characters in the cast of a sitcom raised his profile, and in 1984 he joined ?Saturday Night Live.'

In the '80s and '90s, Crystal graduated to movies. He appeared in a handful of hits, including ?The Princess Bride,' ?Throw Momma From The Train,' ?When Harry Met Sally,' ?City Slickers' and ?Analyze This.' He even put his degree as a filmmaker to good use by writing, directing and starring in ?Mr. Saturday Night' and ?Forget Paris.'

The actor says even though he's in the midst of a career resurgence thanks to December's ?Parental Guidance,' he still wonders if he made the right choice to become an actor all those years ago.

?I still have doubts,' Crystal, who's hosted the Oscars nine times, said. ?You always do. Every time we finish doing something, we don't have something else, except John. He did 14 movies last year. He's the new Michael Caine.

?But what is so fascinating and frustrating and great about life is you're constantly, in some ways, starting over all the time, and I love that. `All right, I did that, but right now I don't have a job.' Then something happens, or you make something happen.'

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A born and bred Hoosier, Ryan Newman spent his childhood racing everywhere from Anderson to Winchester and every short track he could find in a state mad about racing.

He graduated from Purdue and landed a summer job working in Jeff Gordon's old race shop in Pittsboro. One of the perks? He got to live in the shop and sleep alongside the cars.

And like many Indiana kids, he revered Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the track he first visited in 1986 and later accidentally stumbled upon NASCAR's inaugural 1992 test while out buying tires with his mother.

A win at the famed Brickyard? That would be a dream come true for the South Bend native.

Newman made the boyhood dream a cool reality, taking the checkered flag Sunday to end a 49-race winless streak in front of his home state fans. His parents, who fueled his love of racing and took him to the 500 as a kid, joined him for his biggest win in Indiana.

Newman was as cool and collected in Victory Lane as he was on the track when he held off Jimmie Johnson. There were no tears, no quiver in his voice and no need to collect himself as Newman was strangely stoic.

"I don't show a lot of emotion, I think everybody knows that," said Newman, who likened the victory to his 2008 win at the Daytona 500. "I had the same emotion, the same thankfulness I did when I won the Daytona 500 because I feel everybody that has been a part of my racing career ? from people that bought my racing uniform, bought me a right rear tire, given us a credit card to get to some race track at some point in my career ? those are the people that helped me get to where I am today.

"To me, it's awesome to be here at Indy. It's awesome because it's my home state. I've raced go karts at pretty much every go kart track around here, been kicked out of half of them. Those are the things that make it special. I think about those things more than I carry the emotion on my cheeks."

So the emotion was seen in father Greg, who spotted for Newman on Sunday, and his mother, Diane.

Newman kept it together during his celebratory burnout and the drive to Victory Lane, a hallowed area that he twice had to ask his crew over the radio for directions how to get there. He took the customary ride in a convertible around the track with his wife and two young daughters, and happily bowed again and again to kiss the Yard of Bricks.

Sure, he smiled, and shared some tender hugs with one of his daughters. But that was the most anyone was getting out of Newman, who had admitted to getting emotional after winning the pole on Saturday but seemed almost numb following Sunday's win.

"I'm not sure (how I feel) at this point. I know it's an amazing feeling," he said. "I was more emotional yesterday after winning the pole than I was two laps after doing my donuts and everything else today. I'm not sure why. I took an emotional hit yesterday. Just an awesome day."

Newman beat Johnson twice on this Brickyard weekend, first when he set a NASCAR track record in knocking Johnson off the pole in qualifying, then Sunday with a fast final pit stop to snatch the win from the four-time Indianapolis winner.

The two were the class of the field ? they combined to lead 118 of the 160 laps ? but it was Johnson who dominated the race and appeared to be just a bit better. But Johnson pitted from the lead with 27 laps remaining and it was a slow final stop for the Hendrick Motorsports crew.

Newman pitted after that and took only two tires to move into the lead after the green-flag stops cycled through the field. The closest Johnson would get to him again was when he paid a congratulatory visit to Newman in Victory Lane.

The victory comes as Newman is looking for a job.

Stewart-Haas Racing has signed Kevin Harvick to join the team next season, and team co-owner Tony Stewart informed Newman two weeks ago he won't be brought back in 2014. It didn't change the post-race mood, as Stewart hustled to Victory Lane, lifted Newman from behind and the two shared a long embrace.

"He just had an awesome weekend," Stewart said. "I kept looking up the board and watching and I was scared to ask where he was at and how big of a lead he had. I didn't want to jinx him. Just really proud of him ? he's a great teammate and an even better friend."

Johnson, the Sprint Cup Series points leader who was hoping to tie Formula One's Michael Schumacher as the only five-time winners in Indy history, finished 2.657 seconds behind Newman in second.

"There's definitely disappointment there, but that's racing. It happens," Johnson said. "We win as a team, lose as a team. There's been some late race mistakes on my behalf that have taken race wins away from us. Granted, not a major event like this. We still ended up second.

"We have a lot to be proud of over the course of the weekend. We'll do the best to let it roll off our shoulders by tomorrow afternoon."

Kasey Kahne, Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, was third and Stewart was fourth as Chevrolet swept the top four spots. All four cars were also powered by Hendrick Motorsports.

"We had pretty good power all day long. There were a lot of scenarios where I noticed how good it was," Stewart said. "That's what you expect out of the Hendrick engine department. That's the standard that they set."

Matt Kenseth was fifth in a Toyota and followed by Hendrick's Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, as all four Hendrick entries landed inside the top seven. Earnhardt rallied from a loose wheel on the opening run of the race to grab his top-10 finish.

"I knew it was loose," said Earnhardt, adding it was a no-brainer to pit. "You have a wheel falling off, you have something serious happening. Come in, it's dangerous staying out there. You can hit the wall, or wreck something, or wreck some other people. I don't want to do that. It is a long race. We had an early chance to fix that, and that is fine. It gave us an opportunity to try some different strategies, and it worked out for us."

Joey Logano was eighth in a Ford, and followed by Juan Pablo Montoya and Kyle Busch, who picked up his first career win at the Brickyard in Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

NASCAR's 20th running at the historic Brickyard wasn't the most exciting race ? there were three cautions, for stalled cars or debris, and no accidents or spins ? and the field spread out into single-file racing and passing wasn't easy. Montoya complained at one point over his radio that attempting to pass another car only cost him position on track.

"It's just Indy, it's always hard to pass," Kahne shrugged. "The competition's close, so you can get runs and then you can kill your run a little bit if that guy runs a certain part of the race track. So the guys that know where to put their car when a car being them is faster, it's tough to pass them."

The in-race intrigue came via varied strategies among the teams as they all tried different methods to steal a good finish in a race that logged as the fastest Brickyard in history at 2 hours, 36 minutes and 22 seconds.

"Overall I thought it was an exciting race," said Kenseth. "I thought there was a lot of different strategies there at the end and the two fastest cars ended up battling for the win. It wasn't any harder (to pass) than normal. It's just always hard to pass here."
