Please critique my emergency water storage plan - Survivalist Forum

When I filled my Aquatainers from the outside water spigot, I bought and used a food-grade hose designed for RVs. Garden hoses are not food grade. Your problem may be that you are a fair distance away from the spigot, thus the hose you'd need would be very long, and pricey. The short ones are quite reasonable (under $20), the longer ones you might have to special-order.

As far as the "replace once a year" thing--sterile water in a sterile container doesn't go bad. I rinsed my aquatainers with tap water--already chlorinated from the municipality--and just filled them.

I think you have a good plan generally. The only thing I'd be concerned with would be freezing, but even then, you could provide supplementary heat in a number of ways, and if you insulated the tank (wrap fiberglass insulation around it, build an insulated enclosure, something like that), it would hold heat much longer. It takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of that much water.

If it's insulated, it wouldn't take much to keep it above freezing. Wrapping a gutter heat tape around it would work, a 60-watt light bulb underneath might be enough so long as you capture the heat so it goes into the tank and doesn't leak out the sides of the pallet.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in this one basket--I'd have a few cases of bottled water, maybe a couple of Aquatainers or similar, and I'd add some calcium hypochlorites (pool shock) for purification, and some filters (the monolithic filters are wonderful for the price).

Microsoft's Bob Heddle backstage at Expand (video)

DNP Microsoft's Bob Heddle backstage at Expand video

Bob Heddle, director of Kinect for Windows, took to our stage today to talk about the evolution of Microsoft's gaming peripheral. After turning our editor-in-chief into a rather rubbery looking 3D rendering, he headed backstage for an interview with Brian Heater where the two talked about Kinect's effect on Microsoft's business as a whole and the possibility of an embedded future. For the full interview, check out our video after the break.

Florida lawmakers look to ban EBT use at strip clubs, casinos, liquor ...

Florida lawmakers are considering legislation that would ban those receiving government assistance from using their electronic benefits (EBT) cards at strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores.

Florida?s House Healthy Families Subcommittee on Wednesday?approved?a House bill, HB 701, introduced by Republican state Rep. Jimmie Smith to that end.

Those enrolled in food assistance programs or on temporary cash assistance generally access those benefits via EBT cards, which work like a credit or debit card.

The legislation, according to Smith, was a direct result of a section of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012.

That portion of the 2012 federal legislation requires states receiving to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) grants to ?maintain policies and practices as necessary to prevent assistance provided under the State program funded under this part from being used in any electronic benefit transfer transaction in any liquor store; any casino, gambling casino, or gaming establishment; or any retail establishment which provides adult-oriented entertainment in which performers disrobe or perform in an unclothed state for entertainment? by 2014.

?It has always been my agenda to make sure that if anybody is going to use tax dollars, it?s used to help,? Smith told The Daily Caller. ?In that, not only are we in compliance with the federal government, but our tax dollars will be used to help people who really need help ? and not for personal entertainment.?

Last April an Action News Jacksonville investigation revealed that some Floridians have been using their EBT cards at ATMs in strip clubs, bars and gambling facilities. As the news outlet reported, the government is not tracking where the assistance dollars are being spent.

?We have no ability. We have no laws in which to say ? you can?t use your card here, here or here,? Florida Department of Children and Families spokesman Joe Follick told Action News at the time.

Republican state Sen. Andy Gardiner introduced companion legislation on the Senate side earlier this month.

Update: An earlier version of this story referenced the bill as filed. The provision banning EBT use in gun shops was stripped out in committee.

Familiar faces should return for 'Veronica Mars'

CW

Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen and Tina Majorino in "Veronica Mars."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

The "Veronica Mars" movie is really happening. Thanks to a record-setting fund-raising campaign on Kickstarter (reaching its $2 million goal in under 12 hours and likely to quadruple that total before the drive ends April 12), the cult favorite -- which was canceled after three seasons -- is returning to the big screen.

We used to be friends, a long time ago, with the sassy detective, her doting dad and the gang, but it's been six years since the show bid farewell in May 2007.

When creator Rob Thomas first pitched the movie years ago, he writes on Kickstarter, it "revolved around graduation day at Hearst college -- Wallace and Mac were graduating at least, Veronica had been sidetracked by freeing Keith from prison. Plus, there was a murder in Neptune that was affecting the beach city's spring break business in much the same way a great white shark affected the beach community of Amity."

But in the new iteration, "Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune," wrote Thomas. "In the years since spoiling Keith's chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn't taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica's 10-year high school reunion."

"Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make," said the optimistic producer.? "A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl."

With $3 million already in the bank, the brawl is a done deal -- and Thomas promises Logan Echolls will survive to return in the movie's sequel. But what else do we hope to see?

Francis Capra as Weevil in "Veronica Mars."

First of all, Weevil. I'll say it again, WEEVIL! After everything he suffered, the former gangster deserves some success. Maybe entrepreneurial millionaire? And because every successful corporation (and mystery) needs a computer genius, Mac runs his IT Department. She's able to balance her thriving career with motherhood, because her husband is an easygoing stay-at-home dad named -- wait for it -- Dick Casablancas!

Greg Schwartz/Warner Bros./Getty Images

Joss Whedon as Douglas on "Veronica Mars"

Is it too much of a stretch for Keith Mars to head Weevil's security team? Or is he back in the gumshoe game, working alongside Vinnie Van Lowe?

Wallace, naturally is an NBA star, and devotes the off-season to his philanthropic organizations -- but once in a while he'll go clubbing with Piz, Neptune's hottest DJ.

Will Duncan Kane return from Down Under to steal Veronica's heart away from Logan? Or could she rekindle a romance with Deputy Leo now that's he's -- duh -- sheriff?

Obviously, when Veronica returns to town she will need to rent a car. You're hired, Joss Whedon!

Who -- and what -- are you hoping to see in the "Veronica Mars" movie? Share your ideas on our Facebook page!

Home equity loans make a subtle return | HSH Financial News Blog

March 15th, 2013 by Tim Manni

?

Money houseIf lenders are still reluctant to lend first-mortgage money, it?s no surprise that lenders have been anything but willing to lend money for second mortgages since home prices tanked dramatically a few years back.

Since the downturn, home equity lending disappeared along with homeowner equity nationwide. However, now that home prices have begun to rebound and equity is starting to return, it?s reasonable to think that home equity lending will return with it.

One sign of home equity lending?s return came with the announcement this week that Discover Financial Services will begin offering home equity loans in the second half of 2013.

Filling a hole

It wasn?t all that long ago that major lenders announced they were getting out of the reverse mortgage business, shrinking the already small pool of available home equity lenders.

Recognizing there was a hole to fill in the industry, and eager to compete with the fast-growing Quicken Loans, Discover decided to expand their mortgage platform into home equity lending.

?We?re going to build on our mortgage platform with the launch of a home equity product,? Roger Hochschild, Discover president, said on Tuesday.

?Approximately 80 percent of Discover customers are homeowners, and a sizable number of them could benefit from a home equity product,? said Carlos Minetti, consumer banking president.

Home equity loan rates at record lows

If you?re lucky enough to have some home equity and you can find a lender who is willing to lend, interest rates for these products are at record lows, says Keith Gumbinger, vice president of HSH.com. Record-low home equity rates suggest two things, he says:

  1. The low rates engineered by the Fed continue to bleed their way into all aspects of lending markets to a varying degree
  2. It?s an indication that lenders are trying to attract some additional business which presents a far greater profit opportunity

?Still, there are considerable potential risks of loss, so lenders remain wary and the equity lending market is by no way fully recovered at this point,? says Gumbinger. ?It?s hard to make a blanket statement on when home equity lending will fully return. That said, I would expect that less-restrictive terms and conditions, and a wider availability for equity loans and lines of credit, will continue to emerge the longer property prices show signs of firming.?
