Equipment You Will Need to Have

To make a plastic bag memory book, you will need a box of gallon-sized clear plastic zip lock bags. Make sure you find plain bags, instead of ones with markings on the front. You?ll also need a couple of pieces of light cardboard, cut to measure 12 x 12 inches square. Gather a supply of scrapbook paper, or just substitute cheap construction paper, especially if children will be making this craft. A couple more things you will need to have are glue sticks, some scissors, a ruler, a hole punch, a yarn needle, some markers, as well as a hammer and thick nail. And you will obviously want some nice pictures to put in your scrapbook. Use printed off digital photos for kids, instead of using the original prints of film photos. If you are creating a book for a relation, you might want to select photos that are nice enough to display in quality photo albums. Kids are often satisfied with any type of photos though.

Putting Together the Album

You may want to put the book together for yourself if you are producing the book as an activity for your little ones. Figure out the number of pages you will want to have in the book, and then get that amount of plastic bags. Join them together by stapling together 5 bags, placing the staples along the left side and the opening on the top edge. If your complete number of pages will be greater than 5, than make more sections. Take one of the cardboard pieces and position it on a padded surface where you will be working, and place a pile of the plastic bags on top of it. Using the nail and hammer, pound holes in the cover and plastic bags, each roughly an inch apart. Do it again with the other cover and the remaining plastic bag sections. Position the clusters of bags in between the covers, line them up with all of the holes matching up, and then sew it all together with a needle and a piece of yarn, then simply knot the ends when you are all done. Using the ruler as a guide, score a line along the front and the back bound edges, so that you can fold them back. When you do this the book will open with little effort.

Inserting the Pictures

After you have made the book, then will come the very fun part. Get a stack of construction paper and some photographs that will fit the bags correctly and then present them to your child. Then they can use sticky squares or some glue and some markers and a pair of scissors to create fun pages. When their scrapbook pages are complete, simply slide them into the bag pages and zip shut. You might want to take a little extra time and care if you plan on giving the scrapbook as a gift. As an extra advantage, these pages are so very easy to open and close again that you can exchange pictures between your album and wall photo frames easily.
