Digital distribution service Desura has launched a dedicated client for Linux which it says will "help promote and grow gaming" on the open-source operating system.
The client allows enables automatic installation and patching of games on Linux, and launches with over 65 games. Desura says it now offers the only game client that runs on Windows and Linux.
In a press release, founder Scott Reismanis said: "Linux users were continually reaching out to us offering their support and encouragement as we developed the Linux client. I believe we have created a robust tool to help promote and grow gaming on Linux."
Dennis Shirin, CEO of Unigine 3D, whose strategy title Oil Rush is on the service, said the launch of Desura was a "major step forward for Linux gaming."
All of which sounds a little fanciful, but evidence of there being significant appetite for more games on Linux comes from the Humble Indie Bundle. The regular pay-what-you-want indie promotion breaks down average payments by platform, with Linux users regularly paying more than those on Windows or Mac.
