Wooden Garden Sheds: Do They Deserve A Place In Your Garden?

Article Directory :: Home & Family Articles

Wooden garden sheds are available in many different designs and they can be an enchanting enhancement to your garden area. Some people just use their shed to keep their gardening supplies, however, there are several instances where a garden shed is also used as a workshop or a place to pot plants. For some folks a shed can also be a place where you can go to find some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Why are wooden garden sheds so popular?

Wooden garden sheds are more popular than sheds made of metal sheets, PVC, or any other material because they are a real asset to a garden landscape. Sheds constructed with pressure treated lumber are resistant to termite attack and other insect problems and do not need a lot of maintenance. In addition to pressure treated lumber another popular choice is cedar which has a nice visual appearance and a very pleasant aroma

The advantage of working with wood as opposed to working with metal or plastic is that you just need a few basic tools to get the job done.

To Buy or To Build

There are really only two choices. You can either build a shed yourself from scratch or purchase one that is manufactured and is erected on your location in just a few hours.

If you're looking to purchase a manufactured shed there are plenty of choices when it comes to the design, size, and shape. So whether you're looking for a small 5'x3' shed or even something much larger such as 30'x12' you'll be able to find a design that will meet your needs.

There are also two choices if you choose to erect your own shed. One option is to build your shed using a good set of plans or you can purchase a shed that comes as a kit which you assemble yourself. If you feel somewhat confident about your carpentry abilities, constructing a shed from scratch is a good way to go because you can customize it to your own specifications. If you feel that your abilities aren't quite up to this you can buy a kit that comes with parts that are premeasured and precut.

One of the first things you'll need to buy, if you are going to construct a shed yourself, is good set of comprehensive plans that come with complete instructions. You can find plans for wooden garden sheds in books and magazines, and at your local library or you can find plenty of material in a good size bookstore. The internet, however, offers the best source of plans because there are so many to choose from.

The shed plan you buy should not only show you precisely how to put your shed together but it should give you a list of all the materials you'll need for the project.

Getting Started

Whether you're going to erect your own shed or buy one, your first task will be to decide what your shed will be used for. If all you want is a place to store your gardening tools, you don't need anything big. However, if you require a multifunctional shed that can be used as a potting shed, tool shed, workshop, and a garage, then you'll need something quite a bit bigger.

When you've decided how big your shed is going to be your next step is to determine what kind of shed roof and foundation you want. And lastly, you should also make sure your shed can withstand the weather conditions in your region.
