10 Biblical Reasons We Should Appreciate Wine | Intoxicated on Life

If you know me well, you know I make my own beer and wine. If you know me really well, you know I really enjoy a frosty mug of IPA or a nice glass of Malbec.

But on more than one occasion I?ve been asked how I could possibly defend my enjoyment of alcohol being a Christian.

I believe the more we embrace a Biblical worldview, the more we will learn to appreciate the good gifts God has given to us, and that includes wine.

I also understand there are some who believe differently than me in this matter. It is not my point here to ?quarrel over opinions? (Romans 14:1). Food and drink are not central matters when it comes to gospel-living. As Paul said, ?The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit? (v.17).

My only point here is to share with you some of what I?ve learned from God?s Word that has informed my opinions about alcohol. Why do I think it is biblical to appreciate wine?

What I?m Not Saying?

1. I?m not saying we should all drink wine (or even like the taste of it). I believe the Bible speaks of wine as a blessing, just like food is a blessing, but that does not mean that we are obligated to enjoy wine personally.

2. I?m not saying we should appreciate the abuse of alcohol. Everywhere the Bible speaks negatively of drunkenness. Examples of this are abundant.

Rebellious children who lived lives of gluttony and drunkenness were commanded to be stoned in ancient Israel (Deuteronomy 21:20). Drunkenness is one of the reasons why Israel and Judah went into exile (Isaiah 5:11-12,22; Hosea 4:10-11; Amos 6:4-7). As such, fathers counseled their children, ?Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,? because no one who is led astray by alcohol becomes wise (Proverbs 20:1).

Proverbs 23:29-35 vividly paints the life an alcoholic. Such people linger over their glass of sparkling red wine and relish in it as it goes down smoothly, but in the end it stings them (v.31-32). Such people have woe, sorrow, strife, are always complaining, and are always hurting themselves (v.29). In their drunkenness their eyes see strange things and their hearts think perverse thoughts (v.33). They stumble and pass out like men who have been struck down, but then they dream of waking so they can have another drink (v.34-35).

The apostle Peter described the ?flood of debauchery? that is typical among the pagan nations? ?sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry??and he urges his Christian readers to no longer live for these human passions but for the will of God (1 Peter 4:1-5). Paul commands his readers to be filled with the Spirit rather than being ?drunk with wine.? This he calls a life of ?debauchery,? meaning depravity, licentiousness, decadence, and wastefulness (Ephesians 5:18).

3. I?m not saying there aren?t times to wisely abstain from drinking altogether. There are many examples of people in the Scriptures who abstained from alcohol for specific reasons.

  • Priests who served in God?s tabernacle were forbidden from drinking any wine or strong drink prior to their priestly duties (Leviticus 10:9; Ezekiel 44:21).
  • Nazarites were men who took a special vow of service to God, and these men were commanded to separated themselves from wine (Numbers 6:3,20; Amos 2:12).
  • In the Old Testament, Kings and princes were told to stay away from wine or strong drink so they wouldn?t pervert justice (Proverbs 31:4).
  • The prophet Daniel, even though it was his custom to drink wine (Daniel 10:3), chose not to drink the king?s wine when he was preparing for service in the king?s court in Babylon (Daniel 1:16).
  • While Jesus was dying an excruciating death on the cross, He was offered wine mixed with myrrh. Tradition tells us that respected women of Jerusalem supplied this wine as a narcotic to criminals being crucified. Jesus refused this wine (Matthew 27:34; Mark 15:23) choosing to endure with full consciousness the pain of the cross.
  • Paul speaks of abstaining from wine if drinking wine if it grieves another brother in Christ or causes him to stumble (Romans 14:15,21).

What I Am Saying?

What I am talking about is attitude. When you think of a glass of wine, or for that matter, vats of wine overflowing, do you count such a thing as a blessing? When you think about the calm, relaxation, and contentment one feels after enjoying a glass or two of good wine, do you praise God for this good gift? Do you believe you can drink wine in honor of the Lord and to His glory (Romans 14:6; 1 Corinthians 10:31)?

A Note on Alcoholic Content

There is no shortage of materials available trying to answer the question about the alcoholic content of wine mentioned in the Bible. Some take the position that any time wine is praised in the Scriptures, it must be talking about the non-alcoholic variety (i.e. grape juice). I take serious issue with this for several reasons, but space doesn?t permit me to go into it here.

I refer my readers to the fine paper written by Kenneth Gentry, Jr., ?The Bible and the Question of Alcoholic Beverages? (pdf), published in Criswell Theological Review in the Spring of 2008. In this article he sets out to prove, among other things, that ?the wine of the Bible was a fermented quality, alcoholic-content, potentially inebriating beverage.?

10 Biblical Reasons We Should Appreciate Wine

1. Wine was a blessing from God for wise and obedient living.

Proverbs 3:9-10 states that when we honor the Lord with our wealth and with the firstfruits of our land, ?then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with wine.? Repeatedly wine is listed among the abundant blessings God promises to Israel if they keep His covenant (Deuteronomy 7:13; 11:14; 33:28).

2. The loss of wine was evidence of God?s curse.

Moses warned God?s people that if they disobeyed the voice of the Lord, many curses would overtake them. They would work in their vineyards but never taste the wine (Deuteronomy 28:39). Foreign nations would rob them of their crops, including their vineyards (v.51). On several occasion God dries up the wine of his disobedient people (Hosea 9:2; Joel 1:10; Amos 5:11; Micah 6:15; Zephaniah 1:13; Hagai 1:11). Twice God curses the land of Moab drying up their winepresses (Isaiah 16:10; Jeremiah 48:33).

3. Wine was an acceptable sacrifice to give to God.

Wine and other intoxicating drinks were poured over sacrificial offerings on the altar as drink offerings (Exodus 29:40; Leviticus 23:13; Numbers 15:5,7,10 18:12; 28:7,14; Deuteronomy 18:4; 1 Samuel 1:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5; Ezra 6:9; 7:22; Nehemiah 5:11; 10:37,39; 13:12). Even the Levites received wine for themselves from the tithes of given by worshipers (Numbers 18:30).

4. God gives us wine to settle our stomachs.

Paul counsels his son in the faith, Timothy, ?No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments? (1 Timothy 5:23). This home-remedy for poor digestion has actually been confirmed by modern studies. Fermented drinks like beer, sherry, or wine are powerful stimulants of gastric acid secretion, and can even speed up the emptying of the stomach. Red wine also contain polyphenols that trigger the release of nitric oxide which relaxes the stomach wall, thus optimizing digestion.

5. God gives us wine to lighten our hearts.

Wine ?cheers God and men? (Judges 9:13). The psalmist praises God for his provision: ?You cause the grass to grow for the livestock?and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth?and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine?and bread to strengthen man?s heart? (Psalm 104:14-15).

6. Abundant wine is one of the blessings of the age to come.

On the day God swallows up death forever and wipes away every tear, the Lord ?will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, or aged wine will refined? (Isaiah 24:6). On that day God will again be God to all the clans of Israel, He will restore their fortunes, ?they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine? (Amos 9:14), ?they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil? (Jeremiah 31:12). God promises to restore to Israel the years that the swarming locust has eaten: the threshing floors will be full of grain and ?the vats shall overflow with wine and oil? (Joel 2:24-25).

7. God invites His people to celebrate in His presence by drinking wine.

Year after year the Lord?s people brought a tithe of their crops to Jerusalem. There, where God made his name to dwell, He said they should eat the tithe of their grain, oil, meat, and even their wine. This regular feast in God?s holy presence was instituted so that they might ?learn to fear the Lord your God always? (Deuteronomy 14:23).

Others had a longer journey to Jerusalem so they sold their crops, took the money with them, and purchased goods for the feast when they arrived. Listen to the very liberal and celebratory words God speaks to them: ?spend the money for whatever you desire?oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household? (Deuteronomy 14:26). Whatever you desire, whatever you prefer, even if it is wine or strong drink, buy it and bring it to the worship feast. (This is the same word translated ?covet? in the tenth commandment in Deuteronomy 5:21.)

God says the same thing about the age to come. In that day, Israel?s oppressors will never rob them of grain or wine again, ?but those who garner it shall eat it?and praise the Lord, and those who gather it shall drink it?in the courts of my sanctuary? (Isaiah 62:9).

8. Wine can be very appropriate for celebrations.

The bride who sings in the Song of Solomon says, ?He brought me to the banqueting house,? (or literally translated, his ?house of wine?), ?and his banner over me is love? (Song of Solomon 2:4). In Hebrew tradition, wine was very popular at weddings. We see this in the wedding feast Jesus attends in Cana. There, for His first miracle, Jesus miraculously produced more than one hundred and twenty gallons of fine wine for the wedding feast (John 2:6-11).

That day at the wedding in Cana, before the festivities began, the groom?s father would likely have held high a cup of fine wine and spoke a cheerful blessing over the new couple. When Jesus multiplied that wine in Cana, He was, in effect, multiplying that blessing of joy and happiness for the bride and groom.

9. Jesus banqueted with wine to demonstrate the joy of the nearness of the kingdom of God.

One of the marks of Jesus? ministry was table fellowship. Jesus is often found eating in other?s homes or hosting meals. These instances of table fellowship left a deep mark on those who observed them or participated in them. These were not merely times to share food, but were platforms for Jesus to challenge social norms and make profound theological statements about himself and the kingdom of God.

What were these moments of table fellowship like? The Gospel of Luke offers us many glimpses. These were far from casual meals. Repentant sinners impacted by Jesus? message would hold great feasts, and together Jesus and his disciples would recline with tax collectors and other notorious individuals (Luke 5:29). Jesus would even host his own banquets (Luke 15:2). These joyful feasts were settings where Jesus would call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32), where men publicly turned from sin (Luke 19:1-9), and where Jesus spoke of the joy of the angels when even one sinner repents (Luke 15:7,10). The meals might even be interrupted with sobering moments of remorseful weeping as Jesus declared sinners forgiven (Luke 7:48). Some were miraculously healed (Luke 14:4). During these times, eager listeners would sit at His feet to listen (Luke 10:39). He would rebuke hypocrisy and empty religion (Luke 11:37-52), teach about genuine humility and honor (Luke 14:7-11), and challenged the social norms that divided rich and poor (Luke 14:12-14).

And yes, these would be feasts?often feasts accompanied with wine?and yes, Jesus drank. ?John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine,? Jesus told the crowds. But ?the Son of Man has come eating and drinking ? (Luke 7:33-34). Many scholars believe John the Baptist was a Nazarite from birth. The angel Gabriel told John?s father, ?he must not drink wine or strong drink? (Luke 1:15). John was a man of the wilderness; he and his disciples would often fast (Matthew 9:14; Mark 1:6). But Jesus, by contrast, was known for his joyful feasting, so much so He even gained the unjust reputation of ?a glutton and a drunkard? from his critics (Luke 7:34).

On the heels of the banquet at Levi?s home, Jesus asked the questioning Pharisees and scribes, ?Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?? (Luke 5:34). The bridegroom of God?s people had come. The kingdom of God was at hand. This was no time for mourning, but celebration.

10. Jesus chose wine to represent his blood.

During Jesus? last Passover meal, several cups of wine were shared among the disciples (Luke 22:17-18,20). Right after the meal, Jesus picked up cup of wine, gave a word of thanks to His Father, and then said, ?Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father?s kingdom? (Matthew? 26:27-29). Paul called this cup of wine ?the cup of blessing? (1 Corinthians 10:16) and ?the cup of the Lord? (v.22).

By faith in His blood, Jesus is our atonement (Romans 3:25). By drinking His blood we have eternal life (John 6:53). By His blood we are justified in God?s sight (Romans 5:9), we have peace with God (Colossians 1:20), we are redeemed and made God?s own (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; Revelation 5:9), brought near to Him (Ephesians 2:13), ransomed from our futile ways (1 Peter 1:18-19), cleansed of all sin (1 John 1:7; Revelation 1:5), and sanctified (Hebrews 13:12). By His blood our consciences are cleansed (Hebrews 9:14) so we can have the boldness to draw near to God in the Holiest Place (Hebrews 10:19).

And of all the things Jesus chose to represent his blood to us, he used wine.

Dick Cheney on his heart pump and Obama's record

With a new heart, Dick Cheney is back.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl, Cheney reflects on the "miracle" that a heart transplant promises to give him years of added life. And Cheney shows he is as confrontational as ever, taking on President Obama -- and even Sarah Palin.

Cheney, 71, details how far back he has come. He remembers waking from weeks of heavy sedation after having a pump installed in his heart in 2010, a grueling operation that left him seeing his own mortality in the mirror.

"Two years ago this time I was on a respirator, heavily sedated. Just had a pump... installed on my heart because my heart had gotten so weak after six heart attacks and 30-some years of heart disease that it was, you know, it was at the end," he said.

"I lost 40 pounds. I was heavily sedated in the intensive care unit for weeks afterwards. I had pneumonia while I was in recovering from the surgery. And by the time I came out from under I looked in a mirror and what I saw was my dad shortly before he died. He was in his 80s," Cheney said.

That is why Cheney, in his first interview since his heart transplant four months ago, calls his recovery "nothing short of a miracle."

"I haven't felt this good in years," he said.

He doesn't know who gave him his new heart because protocol is to maintain anonymity, but the former vice president said there is a program that allows an intermediary to reach out to the donor family to see if they want contact with the recipient.

"At some point I would be, you know, certainly amenable to contact with the family. But we have not at this point exchanged any information," Cheney said.

If contact was made, Cheney said he would "express my gratitude for what's a magnificent gift. I can't think of a more magnificent gift than to be given additional years of life."

Healthy again, Cheney has resumed his love of fishing and his frank evaluations of politicians, including himself.

Cheney left office as one of the most unpopular vice presidents in the country's history, but the man known for his defiance of public opinion is vintage Cheney.

"I'm very comfortable with what I did, and why I did it, and how I did it," he said.

When asked if he had any regrets, Cheney replied, "Not really."

"You can't be judged, and shouldn't judge, people in those senior levels by the polls," he told ABC News.

He does not spare his fellow Republicans, calling Sen. John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his vice president running mate a "mistake."

Cheney said Palin had been governor of Alaska for two years at the time and "did not pass the test" of being ready to be president.

He also wryly described how the list of vice presidential candidates is used by officials up for reelection.

"I had a couple of calls from politicians who'd say, 'You know, it'd really help me in my race back home, Dick, if I was on the list.' Done. You're on the list," said Cheney. "Then somebody could go leak the fact that they were on the list."

Cheney helped vet candidates for Gerald Ford in 1976 and George W. Bush in 2006 that ultimately settled on Cheney.

"But that was the big list. It was easy to get on the big list. The tough part is the small list, the one that's really under active consideration," he said.

Cheney's harshest criticism, however, was for President Obama.

"I obviously am not a big fan of President Obama. I think he's been one of our weakest presidents. I just fundamentally disagree with him philosophically. I'd be hard put to find any Democratic president that I've disagreed with more," he said.

When asked if he thought Obama was "worse than Jimmy Carter," Cheney replied, "Yes."

Cheney gave Obama credited for killing al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but added that "a lot of that intelligence that laid the groundwork for what ultimately led to the capture of Bin Laden [was] as a result of programs we had in place in the Bush administration."

He was sharply critical, however, of Obama's plans to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We should not be running for the exits. We should not be turning our backs on our friends in that part of the world," he said.

Humpback whales staying in Antarctic bays later into autumn

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Large numbers of humpback whales are remaining in bays along the Western Antarctic Peninsula to feast on krill late into the austral autumn, long after their annual migrations to distant breeding grounds were believed to begin, according to a new Duke University study.

The study, published July 30 in the journal Endangered Species Research, provides the first density estimates for these whales in both open and enclosed habitats along the peninsula in late autumn.

It suggests that the little-studied bays are much more important late-season feeding grounds for humpback whales than scientists previously thought. It also highlights changes that are occurring in the region in response to the increasingly delayed arrival and reduced extent of annual winter sea ice cover, associated with rapid climate change.

"The old dogma is that by late autumn, the ice is heading in and the whales have headed out. But 70 percent of our surveying took place in waters with no ice, and we detected 371 groups of humpback whales over a 654-kilometer survey area, with density estimates of up to 1.75 whales per square kilometer," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment and lead author of the paper.

At that density, Johnston said, "if you were to walk to the bridge of a ship and look around, you'd spot two whales within 500 meters of the boat. That's higher than anyone expected."

The scientists found the highest densities of whales in narrow, enclosed sections of Wilhelmina Bay, Andvord Bay and the Errera Channel. They found the lowest densities -- as low as 0.02 whales per square kilometer -- in the open water of the adjacent Gerlache Strait, which separates the Palmer Archipelago from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

They conducted the study aboard the National Science Foundation (NSF) research vessel Laurence M. Gould in late April through early June of 2009. NSF funded the study.

Johnston's co-authors are Ari S. Friedlaender, research scientist; Andrew J. Read, Rachel Carson Associate Professor of Marine Conservation Biology; and Douglas P. Nowacek, Repass-Rodgers University Associate Professor of Marine Conservation Technology. All four are stationed at the Duke University Marine Laboratory. Nowacek holds a joint appointment as associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.

Scientists have long known the waters around the Western Antarctic Peninsula are important foraging grounds for humpback whales that feed on swarms of shrimp-like krill there, but previous studies have been conducted earlier in the season or in open waters farther from land.

"Establishing the autumn density of humpback whales in the inshore regions of the Western Antarctic Peninsula is crucial for understanding the role they play in this rapidly changing ecosystem," said Friedlaender. "Our results provide a new perspective on the magnitude of predator-prey relationships in the region as the Antarctic winter sets in.

Being the first to estimate densities in the peninsula's narrow in-shore waters was a challenge, Johnston said, because the line-transect techniques and distance sampling methods scientists traditionally use for this type of study weren't well suited to the bays' tight quarters, tricky currents and jutting shorelines.

"We had no idea that the whales were going to be packed up in these narrow channeles and passages. We had to think on our feet a bit and use alternative sampling approaches and incorporate data from other portions of the project," he said. For instance, data collected from tagging the whales and tracking their underwater movements turned out to be inordinately useful for estimating densities, too.

"Once we knew their dive behaviors, we could establish how likely it was that we might miss them as we were traveling along the surface of the water," Johnston said. "That's not something we would have been able to do using only the traditional methods."

Tokyo protesters demanding end to nuclear power | FOX6Now.com ...

(CNN) ? The 1960s were a time of social revolution. Student, civil rights activists and anti-war protesters rose up against governments around the world, and Japan was no exception.

Hundreds of thousands took to the streets to denounce the security treaty Japan signed with the U.S. in 1960. The rallies, which turned violent at times, were the country?s last significant protests ? until now.

The recent anti-nuclear protests are gathering momentum, and a society once willing to accept the government line is starting to ask questions of its leaders.

Tens of thousands of people now protest outside the prime minister?s residence every Friday with one simple message ? abandon atomic power.

Japan?s grassroots anti-nuclear movement has been growing since last year?s devastating tsunami caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Yukiko Kamaya lives in the town of Futaba, within the 20 kilometer (12 mile) evacuation zone around the nuclear plant. She remembers the panic of running away from her home when disaster struck, not knowing where was safe and not realizing then that she would not be able to return home.

?It is my home town,? she told CNN. ?I want go back home no matter what. I want to return as soon as possible although I know it?s impossible. I hope my dream comes true one day.?

Kamaya, who now lives in temporary housing, says she felt compelled to join anti-nuclear power protests as she doesn?t want anyone else to go through what she has gone through.

This is the seventh protest Nagisa Saito has attended and she?s impressed the numbers are growing.

?What impresses me most is ? people never gave up and the crowd is getting bigger and bigger. Even on a bad rainy day like today, we see this many people gathered, it?s amazing.?

Tens of thousands are calling for no nuclear, but what is the alternative?

One man who only gave his name as Ozaki tells CNN, ?If there is a power shortage, there are alternatives. What about coal-fired power stations, hydro-electric power stations, or we can just survive with what we have. We have to be patient, but even with blackouts, we can survive without nuclear power.?

While the government can?t help but hear these voices, it has managed to resist them so far. Two nuclear reactors were brought back online this month. All 50 reactors had previously been taken offline for maintenance and tests. The government?s argument is simple: Japan needs power.

Read more: What Japanese leaders can learn from the Fukushima nuclear crisis

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told the public last month: ?In order to lead prosperous and decent lives, cheap and stable electricity is indispensable. Japanese society will not be able to function if there is a decision to permanently halt nuclear power generation.?

Masami Hasegawa is a senior manager at Japan Business Federation and agrees that Japan faces an energy crisis heading into the hot summer months. Last year rolling blackouts adversely affected business, he says.

?We hear our members saying that they cannot stay in Japan if this situation continues,? says Hasegawa. ?If the current situation continues, energy consuming industries cannot survive in Japan and they will leave. The immediate effect will be on employment which might be lost.?

But protesters say safety is more important, pointing to a recent parliament report which stated the Fukushima disaster was man-made ? a result of collusion between the plant operator, regulators and the government.

With tens of thousands of evacuees still waiting to hear when or if they can return to their homes near the plant, protesters say a no-nuclear Japan is the only acceptable result.

For First time, This Year's Throne Ceremony ... - Morocco World News

Morocco World News

Rabat, July 29, 2012

For the first time in decades, the Throne celebration, which marks the anniversary of the enthronement of King Mohammed VI, won?t include the allegiance to the King.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery, King Mohammed VI ?on Monday, will chair an Iftar (fast-breaking meal) at the Rabat Royal Palace and deliver the same day the Throne Day?s speech which will be aired on TV and radio channels starting 1.00 p.m.?

?HM the King, Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) will preside, on Tuesday evening at the Rabat Royal Palace, over the oath-taking ceremony by newly-graduated officers from the different military, paramilitary and civilian schools and institutes,? read the statement. The statement made no mention of the allegiance ceremony.

The allegiance ceremony has always been regarded by many Moroccans as a medieval practice that should be abandoned.

Several members of the current PJD-led government had previously voiced their opposition to such protocol.

Saad Eddine Alotmani, Lahbib Chobani, Moustapha Ramid and Najib Bolif signed a document on March 31, 2011 demanding the abolition of ?all ceremonies, traditions and rituals that are perceived to be as humiliating and degrading to the human dignity.? The petition entitled ?The Change that We Want? was signed by some activists, politicians, journalists and former political detainees.

The annual ceremony of allegiance embodied in the ?Bayaa? (Allegiance ceremony) is a century-old tradition. During this ceremony Moroccan Ministers and other officials renew their allegiance to the king.

After tough London trip, Romney heads to Israel

Jason Reed / Reuters

U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is recognized by pedestrians at Grosvenor Place in London, July 27, 2012, as he was forced by gridlock traffic to walk from his hotel to the Irish Embassy to meet with Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny.

By Lawahez Jabari, NBC News

TEL AVIV ? After his gaffe-laden trip to London, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is probably looking forward to a warmer welcome on the next leg of his foreign tour: Israel.

Arriving in Jerusalem on Sunday, Romney is hoping the visit will highlight what he argues are the sharp contrasts?between himself and President Barack Obama?in their approach?towards U.S.-Israeli relations, as well as Iran.?

In a speech earlier this week, Romney accused Obama of "shabby treatment" of Israeli leaders, saying ?the people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world,? and promised to take a tougher stance against Iran.

Their differences extend to their personal relationships. The frosty relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Obama has created a perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. But Netanyahu has a warm relationship with Romney that goes back nearly 30 years, when both worked as advisers at the Boston Consulting Group in the 1970s.

This will be Romney's fourth visit to Israel, his most recent was last year ? when he said at?a conference that Iran's leaders "represent the greatest threat to the world since the fall of the Soviet Union."

On the other hand, Obama has faced harsh criticism for not visiting Israel during his presidency, although he took a similar trip to Romney?s during the 2008 campaign. And historians note that during his two terms in the White House, Ronald Reagan never visited Israel, while?George W. Bush only visited Israel in the seventh year of his presidency. ?

Recent polls suggest that Jewish votes in key battleground states, like Florida, are not a sure thing for Obama come November. Although Obama won 78 percent of votes among Jews in 2008, according to exit polls, that support seems to have weakened. A recent Gallup poll of voters released in June showed that 64 percent of registered voters support Obama versus 29 percent for Romney. Those votes could be critical in what may be a close race, analysts say.?

On the eve of Romney?s trip, Obama signed a bill on Friday to strengthen U.S.-Israeli military ties and reassure Jewish voters of his administration?s ?unshakeable commitment? to the country.?

NBC News spoke with a number of Israeli and Arab analysts, as well as?representatives of Democrats Abroad and Republicans Abroad in Israel, to get an idea of what they think of Romney?s visit. See their answers below.

How will Romney's visit affect public opinion amongst Israelis?

Shimon Schiffer, Chief Political Commentator for Yediot Ahranot, Israel?s most popular daily newspaper: They are aware of the competition between Obama and Romney. It is a dangerous and delicate situation because Netanyahu identifies with Romney and he is also very close to one of the Republican donors in the party. [He was referring to the billionaire GOP supporter Sheldon Adelson]. I don?t think that what we will see here is a healthy relationship between Israel and the White House for the Democrats. If I was in Netanyahu's position, I wouldn't ask Romney to come now.

President Barack Obama signed the U.S./Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act saying the legislation underscores America's unshakeable relationship with Israel, in an attempt at upstaging his political rival Mitt Romney who will head to the country Saturday. Sen. Joe Lieberman discusses with Andrea Mitchell.

Hillel Schenker, Democrats Abroad: The Israeli public traditionally views the Democratic Party as the American party most devoted to Israel. It was a Democratic president, Harry Truman, who welcomed the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and another?Democratic President Jimmy Carter, who devoted so much presidential time and energy to facilitate the Israel-Egyptian peace treaty in 1978. Even after his visit Romney will remain an unknown quantity to the Israeli public, so his visit will not alter Israeli attitudes towards the Democratic Party. ?

First Read: Obama: White House's Israel play

How will Romney's visit impact voters in the U.S., especially in swing states like Florida?

Mark Zell, Republicans Abroad: While the current president was seeking to appease the Muslim world with his 2009 Cairo address and in his visits to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, he has ignored Israel in his travels and has sought to bully Israel into making concessions against its own national interests. A Romney visit will show voters who are concerned about the state of Israel that?a Romney administration will revitalize the Israel-American alliance.?

Hillel Schenker, Democrats Abroad: Many of them will have severe problems with Romney's opposition?to choice for women, to national health care, to Warren Buffett?s proposal for raising taxes for the ?one percent? (that he belongs to) while pandering to the Tea Party and Christian evangelical right.

The fact that former New York Mayor Ed Koch has declared that he will campaign for Obama in Florida will have a greater impact on Jewish voters in Florida than the visit by Romney to Israel. ??

Yoram Ettinger, former Minister for Congressional Affairs to Israel's Embassy in Washington, D.C.?
The decision by Romney to highlight Israel as a unique ally of the U.S. will enhance his standing amongst most Americans ? Christians and Jews ? as evidenced by recent polls, which document increasing American support of Israel. It will have particular impact on voters in critical battleground states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina,?Virginia, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.

How do you rate Obama's presidency with regard?to relations with Israel?

Mark Zell, Republicans Abroad: The Obama administration has been the most hostile to?the state of Israel. The Obama administration has not only been hostile to Israel, but dangerously inept in handling the entire region. Obama has made it a point to create "daylight" between America and its loyal Israeli allies, and a as result has left Israel isolated and twisting in the wind. Whether publicly humiliating the Israeli prime minister, or making what should be automatic vetoes of anti-Israel initiatives contingent on squeezing concessions from the Israelis, this administration has signaled to the world that it is open season on Israel.

Obama has also mishandled the entire region. He poisoned the atmosphere of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process by making untenable demands on Israel. While obsessing over housing starts in Jerusalem, he has helped facilitate the takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood, allowed the Hezbollah takeover of Lebanon and done nothing in Syria as it bloodily disintegrates and loses control of its chemical weapons arsenal. Worst of all, Obama has dithered on Iran, thinking he could make progress just through engagement. The Iranians are happy to talk with him ? as they cross one red line after another on their march towards nuclear weapons.

Hillel Schenker, Democrats Abroad:?He provided Israel with more security for its security needs than any previous president, $3.1 billion. And financed the ?Iron Dome? program which protects civilians in the Israeli south, while putting together a coalition which is using diplomacy and sanctions to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

He also declared in Prague his vision for an eventual Israeli-Palestinian peace, based on the two-state solution, as a cornerstone for peace and stability in the Middle East. Candidate Romney remains an unknown quantity, so it is difficult to predict what a Romney presidency would be like.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks about the Jewish vote with Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Coalition and Jeremy Ben-Ami, President of the non-profit organization J Street.

Yoram Ettinger, former Minister for Congressional Affairs to Israel's Embassy in Washington, D.C.:?Obama considers Israel to be the aggressor and the Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular to be the victims. Obama does not believe in confronting rogue regimes, such as Iran, but rather engaging them in diplomacy and sanctions. Obama is the first American President who shares no affinity to Judeo-Christian values, which are cherished ?according to American public opinion polls ? by 80 percent of the American public.

What the World Thinks of US? Israel

What can Romney offer Israel that Obama has not delivered?

Hillel Schenker, Democrats Abroad: We have no idea what candidate Romney can offer Israel. Hopefully, he will not back the ideas of his major donor Sheldon Adelson, who has opposed the two-state solution concept which is at the foundation of bi-partisan Democratic and Republican approach, as well as the international community's approach.

Simon Schiffer, Chief Political Commentator for Yediot Ahranot, Israel?s most popular daily newspaper: Israelis want to hear a commitment towards Israeli security especially with regards to Iran. They also want the American embassy to move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. But I don?t think Romney will act differently as a president. We have to remember that cooperation between Israel and the U.S. in intelligence, security and defense has never been this high as it was during the Obama administration. But there is a difference between how to deal with the Palestinian issue and how to deal with Iran.?

What are the Palestinians looking for in Romney that Obama has not delivered?

Dr. Issa Hassan Abu Zherah - Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy, Al Quds University: We know that U.S. foreign policy has its factors ? the complicated elements that affect foreign policy, the three main factors are: Middle Eastern oil, free trade and the security of Israel. We know the unique relationship between Israel and the United States. ?

The way in which Americans will formulate their policies after the events of the Arab Spring is what is important to Palestinians? There are three main factors affecting Palestinians: Palestinians don?t believe in the peace process; secondly, they aren't happy with Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority) and have seen nothing after two decades of negotiations; thirdly, many have turned their eyes to the Islamic project. They don?t care about anything anymore? For them the American candidates are a choice between worse and worse. I think the Arab Spring will be in Palestine next.?

What will Romney be discussing in his visit?

Hillel Schenker, Democrats Abroad: Essentially it will be a concentrated crash course on Middle Eastern realities today. He will be trying to accomplish in a very short time what Obama has been doing on an on-going basis throughout his presidency.?

Yoram Ettinger, former Minister for Congressional Affairs to Israel's Embassy in Washington, D.C.: The recent seismic developments on the ?Arab street? highlight Israel's role as the only reliable, stable, predictable, capable, democratic and unconditional ally of the U.S., which offsets the lower U.S. profile in the Middle East and expected cuts in the defense budget.

Guest Post ? Cal Orey, Discover Honey's Amazing Bee-Healthy ...

cal

Guest Author, Cal Orey

Did you know?? Known as Mother Nature?s ?nectar of the gods,? honey was praised for its healing powers as far back as 5,000 years ago by Egyptians. Drawing on the 21st century honey buzz, health author Cal Orey reveals enlightening honey home remedies, straight from the book The Healing Powers of Honey: A Complete Guide to Nature?s Remarkable Nectar!

7 common health ailments in kids from A to Z and amazing at-home honey cures.

These are tried-and-true folk remedies based on scientific studies, real-life stories, medical doctors, researchers, and beekeepers. But caution, consult your health-care practitioner before putting to work any honey cure.

1. ALLERGIES (Stop seasonal misery): Dealing with annoying sneezing, a runny nose, and coughing is no picnic, thanks to seasonal pollen. But honey may come to your rescue.

What Honey Cure to Use: Try eating a tablespoon of locally produced honey. Proponents of honey tell me that your immune system will get used to the local pollen in it (it should be within a 50-mile radius from where you live).
Why You?ll Bee Happy: By taking the honey cure, you may lose your allergy symptoms. It?s worth the effort and is less pricey than a visit to the doctor or an allergist. Honey may enhance the immune system to build up a better arsenal against airborne allergens?and help you breathe easier. Honeycomb may line the entire breathing tract.

2. COUGH (Outfox irritating hacking): A cough is another unwelcome visitor and can make you feel terrible. Let?s face it, cough medicine can be pricey, doesn?t taste good, and may or may not do its job.

What Honey Cure to Use: A teaspoon of buckwheat honey is recommended before bed. Or you can make syrup of 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Repeat each remedy as needed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: A group of Penn State College of Medicine researchers discovered that honey may be the cure. The findings showed that buckwheat honey at bedtime was more powerful for curing a cough in children than a cough suppressant found in over-the-counter medications. It is believed that honey will act as a sedative to the nervous system.

3. ENERGY DRAIN (Beat low energy): Getting your cough under control is a good thing, but then what if your energy plummets? Liquid gold may be the answer again.
What Honey Cure to Use: Each morning include a teaspoon of bee pollen in your breakfast. Go ahead and take it solo. Or try The Honey Association?s Energy Drink recipe: ? pint orange juice, ? pint natural yogurt, 2 tablespoons clear honey. Place all the ingredients in a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Pour into two tall glasses. Serves two people.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey is a source of natural unrefined sugars and carbohydrates, which are easily absorbed by the body. That means, you?ll get a quick energy boost with long-lasting effects. Athletes include it in their daily diets. It was even used by runners at the Olympic Games in ancient Greece.

Thumbs-Down On Honey For Infants

From stinging honey bees to infant botulism caused by honey may sound like ideas for an anti-bee sci-fi film in the works. But in the real world, feeding honey to a human baby is really dangerous and should be avoided.

Sweet honey may contain not-so-sweet Clostridium botulinum spores. This scientific term means honey can cause infant botulism, because babies less than one year of age do not have the developed gastrointestinal tract of older humans.

Bee

Busy Bee At Work.

4. HEADACHE (Bye-bye, pain): Fatigue and headaches are not to be taken with a grain of salt, because it can hurt oh, so bad. There are different types of headaches, and some kinds may benefit from the honey bee?s gift.

What Honey Cure to Use: One cup of tea with 1 teaspoon of honey (the darker the varietal the better) is the remedy. Repeat as needed. Also, drink plenty of water and relax.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: ?The way honey might work for tension headaches,? says New York Headache Center?s Alex Mauskop, M.D., ?is by treating hypoglcemia, which can cause tension and migraines.? He adds that some antioxidants can help prevent headaches, as can magnesium and vitamin B. So turning to antioxidant-rich honey may be a sweet remedy.

5. INSOMNIA (Find sweet dreams): Getting rid of a headache is a challenge, but not getting adequate shut-eye can have long-term effects, too.

What Honey Cure to Use: Take 1 or 2 teaspoons of your favorite honey, especially before going to bed. Try sipping a cup of 2 percent low-fat milk with a dash of cinnamon. The tryptophan in milk will help to calm you.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: It?s a magic trick, according to The Honey Revolution author Ron Fessenden, M.D., providing needed glycogen to the liver so the brain doesn?t go in search of extra fuel in the earl A.M. hours when you should be in Dreamland. ?Consuming honey before bedtime also reduces the release of adrenaline, a catecholamine that raises blood pressure and heart rate,? adds the honey guru.

6. SORE THROAT (Take the sting away): Not sleeping is miserable, but a sore throat can drag you down, too, where don?t feel like walking or talking. Honey has been used as a home for centuries to help sooth one of the symptoms associated with a common cold?namely, a killer sore throat.

What Honey Cure to Use: For relief of symptoms, take a spoonful of your buckwheat honey, as often as you need, to relieve irritation. In between, sip a cup of tea with honey. Also, try pure honeycomb and honey sticks. Don?t forget all-natural honey-lemon lozenges, which also coat the throat for quick relief.
Why You?ll Bee Happy: One, honey will coat your sore throat, the symptom of the cause. Two, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties will help heal the culprit causing your pain.

7. WOUNDS (Heal cuts and scrapes): Once you get a flat stomach, what do you do if you stub your toe or cut your finger? Honey is believed by scientists, such as Dr. Peter Molan to be one of nature?s most powerful wound dressings, which really works.

Gifts From The Hive

  • Eating antioxidant-rich honey can help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes?even help reduce body fat and unwanted weight!?and increase longevity.
  • Pure, raw, unprocessed honey is a healthier sweetener than table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
  • It?s chock-full of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins?and only has 21 calories per teaspoon.
  • Super ?bee foods? (including nutrient-rich bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly) are used and touted for their healing powers by beekeepers and medical experts in the present-day.
  • The honey bee pollinates about one-third of the food we consume (including nutritious fruits and nuts which are healthy for children).

What Honey Cure to Use: Try manuka honey, available in many forms. It?s available online in lotions, creams, and bandages. Apply as directed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey can numb pain. It is osmotic and attracts water. Since bacteria are mostly made of water, they are sucked dry in the presence of honey. Bacteria are further inhibited by honey because the golden liquid produces hydrogen peroxide and is acidic (like vinegar). Honey activates the immune response by providing glucose for the white blood cells. It speeds up the healing process.

So go ahead and use the type of honey advised or your own preference; all-natural, raw honey, dark varietals are recommended for best results. (Warning: To avoid infant botulism, do not fee honey to a baby who is younger than one year.)

Planning for Your Special Needs Children - Estate Planning in ...

Jul 27, 2012 ?/? By: Richard B. Schneider, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Estate Planning

Children with special needs require more care and support than other children. We all instinctively know this to be true. We know they need a different education. There is no simple and easy solution for parents with special needs children. Government funding is being diminished all the time due to statewide budget cuts. Pantech Star Q for Verizon surfaces, offers LTE and Snapdragon S4

This one still isn't completely official just yet, but Android and Me has managed to obtain some pictures and fairly complete details for the Pantech Star Q headed for Verizon -- a device that was first spotted in FCC filings back in April. As you can see, it's a QWERTY slider, and it's said to pack Android 4.0.4, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, front and rear-facing cameras (just 3-megapixels 'round back, though), LTE connectivity, and a 4-inch WVGA display. About the only key details missing are a price and release date, but Android and Me surmises it'll run $99 on-contract with a launch any time now -- both of which seem like safe guesses.

Detroit Teens Gain Green Jobs Skills, Improve Parks | Earthtechling

With both high unemployment statistics and a whole lot of green thinking going on these days, Detroit is looking for ways to give its youth green job skills that will provide an edge in securing employment. Toward that end, Detroit-area powerhouse employer Johnson Controls has teamed up with the Student Conservation Association and The Greening of Detroit on a summer environmental jobs program for local youth, now in its fifth year.

The program, known as the Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC), was designed to promote environmental conservation and the development of professional leadership and job skills, while students complete fundamental environmental projects in local community parks and farms.

Detroit -- Student Conservation Association

image via Student Conservation Association

This summer, 80 students will work with 17 crew leaders to improve ecosystems and facilities in Detroit?s Rouge Park, Belle Isle Park, Eliza Howell Park, Brightmoor neighborhood, D-Town Farm and Singing Tree Farm. Student crews will complete projects involving native planting, new trail development and maintenance, outdoor classroom construction, invasive plant species removal, acreage expansion, and general operations and maintenance. They also will receive job-readiness skills instruction, including help with resume writing, interview skills and personal finance management.

Over the course of this six-week program, Johnson Controls employees will get their hands dirty in the course of joining the student crews in their park projects. In a corresponding fashion, students will also get a chance to clean up, don office garb, and join Johnson Controls employees for a professional development day ? hosted by the company?s Automotive Experience business in Plymouth, Mich. ? where they will learn about the importance of sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable resources in the fields of automotive interior design and engineering, building efficiency and hybrid battery technology.

Student participants in the CLC this year were selected from more than 550 applicants based on their successful completion of a three-step, two-month tryout process. Over the course of that tryout process, candidates were assessed on their work ethic, leadership ability, civic engagement and commitment to the environment. More information on the program is available online.

Boulder Locavore - Local. Seasonal. Food. Drink.: Fresh Peach Sour ...

To me peaches are the quintessential summer fruit.? Their ripeness signals the height of summer produce.? And I don?t know anyone who can resist the soft bite followed by dribbling juice.? Truly the nectar of the Gods.

We have a miniature peach tree in our backyard.? It is miniature in size but the size of the fruit is the same of regular peaches and perhaps even more appreciated since it?s ours.? The tree does not fruit every year.? I?m not completely clear about the rhyme or reason of the fruiting.? It may be due to late frosts that burn the buds.?

A note about ?freestone? peaches.? Heard that term?? Peaches are either ?freestone? or ?clingstone? (and there is a hybrid of both called semi-freestone).? From the name you can guess that freestone are the peach varieties whose pit comes out effortlessly.? The peaches I used are of the clingstone variety.? I purchased them due to being Colorado-local not concerning myself about the pit.? Either can be used for this recipe though freestone makes the preparation easier and quicker.
This year sadly we are getting a bit of help from a pesky squirrel who I noted crawls nimbly out onto the branches, gnaws away at the tops of the peaches, leaving them half naked, violated and hanging for birds to finish the job.? Or for our dogs.? Our two black Labrador Retrievers have been spotted circling under the tree, combing the weeds for fallen fruit which they happily gobble up pit and all.? Everyone loves peaches.

In my Grandmother?s recipe box I found this beautiful coffee cake recipe using fresh peaches (one can also substitute nectarines).? It bears all the traditional attributes of a coffee cake but is made the more seasonally flavorful with use of fresh peaches and sour cream.? It is a delicious addition for weekend brunch and any leftovers are devoured for dessert in my house!

Limo vehicle financing expert Don Coolbaugh of Advantage Funding is offering operators an affordable way to get Lincoln MKT Town Car sedans and stretch limousines.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. ? Advantage Funding announced recently that it has established a walk-away lease program for the 2013 Lincoln MKT limousine and sedan.? The goal of Advantage?s program is to provide operators with a low cost low risk option to lease the MKT.

Advantage created the program in response to requests from limousine operators, said said Donald J. Coolbaugh, Advantage Funding?s vice president of sales. ?Many good operators have come to us and said they cannot afford the high finance payments of the new MKT and MKT limousine. Our walk-away lease puts payments in their price range and complements current payments the industry has become accustomed to.?? ?

Leasing, as opposed to financing, allows the operator to use the vehicle for a certain period of time and only pay for a portion of its cost. ?That?s why the payments are going to be much lower than finance payments,? Coolbaugh said.?? ?

The Advantage Funding walk-away lease also offers the option to prepay the lease without penalty and to purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease term. Provided an operator has a good payment history, Advantage will offer end of term financing to qualified buyers. ?

As with any lease, the Advantage Funding walk-away lease has certain usage and mileage restrictions. Interested operators should contact Coolbaugh at (866) 392-1300 ext. 375 to discuss this program in more detail.

If an operator is reluctant to purchase a new MKT limousine because of its cost, the Advantage Funding walk-away MKT limousine and sedan lease offers a short term commitment with an affordable monthly payment.

Advantage Funding is a non-captive finance and leasing company to the U.S. ground transportation industry.? It is a subsidiary of Marubeni America Corp., the multibillion multinational general Japanese trading company.

Manning Era begins in Denver with packed camp

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning jogged onto the practice field to a loud roar from a record crowd as the Denver Broncos opened training camp at their Dove Valley complex Thursday morning.

It was the first chance for the public to see the four-time MVP in a Broncos uniform. He was released by the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons in March. He missed all of last season with a nerve problem in his neck.

With Manning replacing Tim Tebow, expectations are high for the Broncos, who haven't posted a winning record since 2006.

Right guard Chris Kuper and running back Knowshon Moreno, coming off broken legs, both participated in the workout that drew more than 3,300 fans, the most at a practice since the team moved training camp here in 2003.
