Dell announces XPS 10 Windows 8 hybrid, XPS 12 Duo convertible

Our next stop on the Windows 8 announcement train is Dell, which today unveiled the XPS 10, a Windows RT hybrid device that runs Microsoft's latest OS on a 10-inch touch-enabled display. Dell says you can expect up to 20 hours of battery life, though the company didn't touch on CPU and storage specs.

Dell also unveiled the XPS Duo 12, which sports a 12.5-inch touch display. When closed, it looks like any old XPS laptop, complete with a backlit keyboard, machined aluminum built and carbon fiber surrounding the display. To enter tablet mode, you literally flip the Duo 12's display around and close it over the keyboard. The design is intriguing (and it looks pretty awesome, we have to say), but based on our short hands-on time the hinge feels rather flimsy. Processor options will go up to Core i7 (Qualcomm also told us its Snapdragon S4 chip will power the device). Both the XPS 10 and the Duo 12 will be available later this year after the official Windows 8 launch.

Murphy could bring 'Beverly Hills Cop' to TV

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

Kevork Djansezian / AP file

Sony Pictures Television, "The Last Resort"?executive producer?Shawn Ryan and Eddie Murphy are shopping a small-screen version of Paramount's "Beverly Hills Cop," The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As first reported by Vulture, the pitch is being taken to broadcast networks Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

PHOTOS: Broadcast TV's returning shows for 2012-13 Season

Murphy, who starred in the three films as a crafty Detroit detective working in Beverly Hills, is attached to have an onscreen role in the spinoff. Murphy and Ryan would executive produce the project, which is described as an hourlong crime procedural with comedic elements. Murphy would appear in the pilot and a few episodes throughout the first season, according to Vulture.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in November, Murphy confirmed that there wouldn't be a fourth movie in the franchise and that he was interested in telling a different story about his former alter ego.

PHOTOS: Summer TV preview 2012

"What I'm trying to do with?'Beverly Hills Cop'?now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit," he said at the time. "I'd do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force this premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong."

'Honey Boo Boo': That joke isn't funny anymore

It was unclear if the SPT-Murphy-Ryan pitch being shopped this week was similar to the idea Murphy discussed in November.

Red Cross halts most Pakistan aid after beheading

GENEVA (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Tuesday it was halting most of its aid programs in Pakistan due to deteriorating security and the beheading of a British staff doctor in April blamed on Taliban insurgents.

The independent agency, which had already suspended operations in three of Pakistan's four provinces in May pending a security assessment, said it would carry on working in the country "but on a reduced scale".

"All relief and protection activities are being stopped. All projects of rehabilitation, economic projects, have been terminated," said Jacques de Maio, head of ICRC operations in South Asia, on one of the organization's blog.

"We have closed a number of offices. We are also terminating all visits to detainees in Pakistan," he added.

The agency, which rarely suspends its operations even in war zones, has worked in the country since the end of British colonial rule in 1947.

It was providing mainly health services and physical rehabilitation for victims of violence and natural disasters, many of whom have lost limbs.

The ICRC said it would focus on treating patients wounded in fighting and aimed to reopen a surgical field hospital in Peshawar. It has been closed since the murder of staff member Khalil Rasjed Dale, abducted by suspected militants in January.

The beheaded body of Dale, who ran a health program in the southwestern city of Quetta in the Baluchistan province, was found on April 29.

De Maio said the plan was for Peshawar hospital to be its "flagship" operation in the country ... "unless we determine in the next few weeks that the prerequisites are not fulfilled and therefore the conditions are not met for us to redeploy".

ICRC offices in Sindh province, where flood recovery work is now complete, and in Quetta are being closed, the agency said.

In 2011, Pakistan was one of the largest ICRC operations in the world. The delegation employed 1,300 staff who assisted hundreds of thousands of people.

"We are ready to continue helping people in need, such as the wounded and the physically disabled, provided working conditions for our staff are adequate," Paul Castella, head of the ICRC delegation in Islamabad, said in Tuesday's statement.

Dale was the third Westerner to be beheaded by militants in Pakistan. The others include Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 and Piotr Stanczak, a Polish geologist, in 2009.

A senior police officer said when Dale's body was recovered that the Pakistan Taliban had claimed responsibility for the killing, saying a ransom had not been paid.

The Pakistan Taliban have been fighting a bloody insurgency against the Pakistani state since the group was formed 2007. It is close to al Qaeda and it claimed credit for a failed car bomb attempt in New York's Times Square in May 2010.

Pro-Taliban militants are also active in Baluchistan, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran.

Pakistan is an increasingly dangerous environment for aid workers.

Gunmen in Pakistan shot and wounded a staff member of the World Health Organization and an expatriate consultant working for the United Nations health agency in July.

A month earlier, a Pakistani militant group threatened action against anyone conducting polio vaccinations in the region where it is based, saying the health care drive was a cover for U.S. spies.

Typhoon Tembin seen looping back on Taiwan

TOKYO (AP) ? Typhoon Tembin, which drenched southern Taiwan last week before going out to sea, appeared to be looping back Monday for another run at the island.

The revisit comes after another storm about 1,200 miles (750 miles) to the northeast, Typhoon Bolaven, lashed the Japanese island of Okinawa on Sunday night. It injured five people and left 66,500 households without power as of Monday afternoon, but did less damage than feared before moving north into the East China Sea.

Bolaven could affect coastal areas of South Korea by Tuesday, weather officials said.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau predicts that Tembin will make landfall early Tuesday in the same part of southern Taiwan where it dumped more than 500 millimeters (20 inches) of rain three days ago.

Tembin, packing winds of 119 kph (75 mph), would likely skirt the eastern Taiwanese coast before moving northward toward the Chinese mainland, the bureau said.

Disaster officials in Okinawa were relieved that Bolaven, which was billed to be the strongest storm to hit the southern Japanese islands in several years, ended up being weaker than expected.

Okinawa authorities reported no major damage Monday aside from the blackouts. Officials in the nearby Amami islands said they had reports that some houses were damaged, but information was still being collected.

Many schools and government offices were closed because of the blackouts.

Buses were not running Monday, but Naha Airport, serving Okinawa's capital, began functioning again, with 89 domestic flights operating and about 30 cancelled.

It wasn't immediately clear if ferry service had restarted amid still rough seas.

As Bolvaen, the 15th storm of the season, approached Okinawa on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said wind speeds near the center of the typhoon were about 180 kph (112 mph), with gusts reaching 252 kph (155 mph), possibly equaling or surpassing past records for the area.

But public broadcaster NHK reported that the gusts measured on Amami island north of Okinawa, reached just 140 kph (87 mph).

Okinawa disaster authorities said five people were hurt, including one 75-year-old woman who broke her hip when winds knocked her over.

As of Monday afternoon, 56,700 households were without electricity on Amami island, while 9,800 households on Okinawa were still lacking power.

Paralympic dream for London attacks survivor

When Martine Wright headed to work just over seven years ago and began reading about London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in a newspaper, taking part had not entered her head.

The previous day, July 6, 2005, the International Olympic Committee had awarded the British capital the Games at a ceremony in Singapore, triggering scenes of widespread celebration.

But during the morning rush hour on July 7, the mood was shattered when four Islamist suicide bombers detonated their explosives on three London Underground trains and a double-decker bus, killing themselves and 52 others.

Martine Wright could easily have been one of the victims. One of the bombers blew himself up in the carriage of her Circle Line train. She lost her legs and only awoke from a coma in hospital more than a week later.

Yet, as she prepares to represent the host nation at sitting volleyball in the Paralympics next Friday, Wright counts herself fortunate.

"I can't believe it (the Paralympics) is just days away now, I can't wait," said the 39-year-old, who was born and raised in London, even going to college near the site of the Olympic Stadium in east London.

"We've been watching the countdown for so many days, months and years and I can't wait to get there now.

"I was unlucky to get on that Tube that day but I was so lucky to survive and I think about the 52 people who died that day. I'm the lucky one, I'm embarking on that dream. I feel I was meant to make this journey."

Sport has been a key part of Wright's rehabilitation. She tried a number of different sports at a British Paralympic Association (BPA) open day but plumped for sitting volleyball and started playing in 2009.

The fast-paced game is similar to the non-disabled version but played on a 10m x 6m court with a lower net and involves two teams with six of differing disabilities playing at one time.

Athletes have to keep their pelvis on the ground at all times with games played as best of five sets. The first team to reach 25 points with at least a two-point lead winning a game.

Britain is represented in all 20 sports at the Games, which open on Wednesday and end on September 9.

The team members, brought together only in the last two to three years, readily admit they are not medal-contenders yet are thrilled to be performing on home soil in front of British fans.

"I'm here living a dream," said Wright, in comments issued by the BPA. "The goal is to go out there and do the best we can. We've got to make sure we do our absolute best on court and make our nation and our families proud."

Participation is also another achievement for a determined woman whose story provides a remarkable beginning and end to London's Games.

"I really wanted to have a new ambition after I lost my legs. I tried out lots of different sports but I fell in love with sitting volleyball," she said.

"It's absolutely brilliant. It's a unique sport, I found it quite liberating to be able to get on to the floor and do a sport without any adaptive equipment, like a wheelchair."

Britain's women play their first match against Ukraine on Friday August 3, with Wright undoubtedly set to be the focus of attention.

"My friends and family are the inspiration for me. They're why I can't wait to get on that court, just to make them proud," she said.

But after all she has endured, she has surely already done that.

Hubble captures a collection of ancient stars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a beautiful image of the globular cluster Messier 56 (also known as M 56 or NGC 6779), which is located about 33,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Lyra (The Lyre). The cluster is composed of a large number of stars, tightly bound to each other by gravity.

However, this was not known when Charles Messier first observed it in January 1779. He described Messier 56 as "a nebula without stars," like most globular clusters that he discovered -- his telescope was not powerful enough to individually resolve any of the stars visible here, making it look like a fuzzy ball through his telescope's eyepiece. We clearly see from Hubble's image how the development of technology over the years has helped our understanding of astronomical objects.

Astronomers typically infer important properties of globular clusters by looking at the light of their constituent stars. But they have to be very careful when they observe objects like Messier 56, which is located close to the Galactic plane. This region is crowded by "field-stars," in other words, stars in the Milky Way that happen to lie in the same direction but do not belong to the cluster. These objects can contaminate the light, and hence undermine the conclusions reached by astronomers.

A tool often used by scientists for studying stellar clusters is the color-magnitude (or Hertzsprung-Russell) diagram. This chart compares the brightness and color of stars -- which in turn, tells scientists the surface temperature of a star.

By comparing high quality observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope with results from the standard theory of stellar evolution, astronomers can characterize the properties of a cluster. In the case of Messier 56, this includes its age, which at 13 billion years is approximately three times the age of the Sun. Furthermore, they have also been able to study the chemical composition of Messier 56. The cluster has relatively few elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, typically a sign of stars that were born early in the Universe's history, before many of the elements in existence today were formed in significant quantities.

Astronomers have found that the majority of clusters with this type of chemical makeup lie along a plane in the Milky Way's halo. This suggests that such clusters were captured from a satellite galaxy, rather than being the oldest members of the Milky Way's globular cluster system as had been previously thought.

This image consists of visible and near-infrared exposures from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.3 by 3.3 arcminutes.

A version of this image was entered into the Hubble's Hidden Treasures Image Processing Competition by contestant Gilles Chapdelaine. Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public.

The Norton Rose Canada Classroom Grand Opening

The long-awaited spectacular Norton Rose Canada Classroom will be up and running in September 2012. The former open area in the third floor of Fauteux Hall has been filled in and in its place now stands a 21st century auditorium.

Thanks to the generosity of Norton Rose Canada, construction began in July 2011 on the ultra-modern 89-seat lecture hall in the heart of Fauteux Hall.

?We at Norton Rose are proud to have many University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law alumni as members of our firm and are therefore extremely pleased to be able to give back to the school through this donation.? The University of Ottawa has provided an excellent base from which many of our firm members have launched their careers; we are happy to support the school?s ability to continue to provide a first-rate learning environment for its students.?

Located next to the Tsampalieros Atrium, the classroom is partially transparent and acoustically soundproof with state-of-the-art multimedia built in.? This new space is complemented by a new staircase that connects the main foyer to the third floor, as well as refurbishments to the main foyer itself.? Stepping forward into the future of construction, the University of Ottawa is pleased to highlight that the classroom is fully accessible and incorporated many green materials in the design.

The new room helps alleviate the serious campus-wide classroom shortage, and help us keep most law courses in Fauteux. ?

Check the Common Law website for information on the grand unveiling ceremony this fall.

Short-Circuiting Civilization: Predicting the Disruptive Potential of a Solar Storm Is More Art Than Science

New findings that improve predictions still fall short of giving humanity a head's up on the havoc a solar storm might wreak on Earth

CME, solar storm A prominence producing a coronal mass ejection off the sun's limb on April 16. This CME was not aimed toward Earth. Image: NASA

Much like a temperamental teenager, the sun has been acting up of late. As it approaches the peak of the 11-year solar activity cycle, predicted to occur next May, it has been displaying an increasing number of angry outbursts. These solar storms are technically called solar flares and are giant eruptions of radiation from the sun's atmosphere that cause significant brightening of the area where they occur. Solar flares are sometimes followed by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which spew charged and magnetized particles into space. ?Depending on the direction of their release, these particles sometimes reach Earth where they occasionally damage satellites and disrupt terrestrial power grids. In 1989 a solar storm knocked out electricity across Quebec for nine hours. In 2003 a solar storm crippled South Africa's power supply by damaging 15 large transformers, according to John Kappenman, an expert on how solar storms affect power grids.

On July 12, as a huge CME headed toward Earth, forecasters warned of possible power outages, spurring flight controllers to reroute aircraft on polar routes to lower latitudes, away from the shower of energetic particles. That storm produced spectacular auroral displays but caused no outages. Other CMEs followed on July 19 and 23 but, again, neither caused power failures.

Why is it that some CMEs cause disruptions whereas others of a similar magnitude or even larger do not? Experts, aided by new models, point to a couple of factors.

"For the first time, space weather forecasters now have models and tools for predicting how a CME is released from the sun, accelerated out into the solar wind, and ultimately ends up colliding with Earth's magnetosphere creating the geomagnetic storms that impact so many technologies and systems," says Rodney Viereck of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Environment Center. Viereck's team is responsible for forecasts of geomagnetic storms caused by solar outbursts.

The first factor that influences whether a CME will be disruptive is the direction in which the charged particles are emitted. "Solar storms propagate like a bullet," says Tamas Gombosi, director of the Center of Space Environment Modeling at the University of Michigan. "Sometimes the bullets miss the Earth. When they originate far from the [sun's] central meridian that is facing the Earth, they miss the Earth."

The other factor is the orientation of the magnetic field of the charged particles streaming toward Earth. How the magnetic field of the CME interacts with Earth's magnetosphere, the magnetic shell covering and protecting the planet, determines how severe any terrestrial effects will be, notes Gombosi, who has built models of the interaction.

In general, if the charged particles from a CME hit Earth's magnetosphere head on and the ejection has a strong magnetic field pointing south, then the disruptive effects are greater, Gombosi says.

According to him, some storms are most troublesome because of a process called magnetic reconnection, in which the magnetic field of the CME interacts directly with the Earth's magnetic field. During the interaction, the magnetic field lines that normally connect the planet's north and south poles may get reconfigured and essentially plug into the CME's field lines for a short time, then disconnect and regroup again into a north-south configuration.

"When the CME's magnetic field has a big southward component, there is a high probability of reconnection," Gombosi explains. "On the other hand, if there is a high northward component, there is a low probability of reconnection."

The way reconnection disturbs terrestrial power grids is complex but, in essence, the process mimics what happens in electric generators, where a fluctuating magnetic field (usually a moving magnet) produces a current in a coil of wire, says Adam Szabo, director of NASA's Heliophysics Laboratory. "Just as in regular electric generators, when moving magnetic fields cross long electrical conductors, electric currents will be generated. Power lines are such long conductors. The generated excess current can overload transformers and substations causing a domino effect of outages."

My father died of colorectal cancer when he was ... - New Prayer ...

Posted Yesterday, 06:05 PM

My father died of colorectal cancer when he was 49, and two of his sisters have polyps removed every two years in routine colonoscopies. Due to my family history, even though I'm only 34, I went in for my first colonoscopy today. The procedure seems to have gone well, but the doctor removed 4 small polyps and sent them off for biopsy.??I thought for sure, due to my age, that I would not have polyps.??But, I did, and I do feel a little disappointed, and definitely worried.??I ask for prayer that the biopsies come back saying the polyps are benign, and that God will protect me and my health. Thank you.
