Sergio Garcia leads PGA Tour event | Golf

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Few leads are really safe at birdie-friendly Sedgefield Country Club. The last time Sergio Garcia played here, he learned the hard way.

Garcia shot a 4-under-par 66 Saturday to take the lead at 14-under 196 after three rounds at the Wyndham Championship, a PGA Tour event.

It is a familiar spot for the Spaniard, who shared the third-round lead in 2009 but wound up finishing fourth after falling a stroke shy of a three-man playoff.

"Eighteen pars are not going to win it," Garcia said. "You have to make some birdies out there. ... I don't have a number. I'm not going to say I need to shoot 4 under, 5 under or whatever. Someone might go out and shoot 9 under, and 5 under's not good enough."

Tim Clark (67) and Bud Cauley (66) were a stroke back in the last event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Ex-Washington Huskies player Richard H. Lee (65) was tied for 10th place at 10 under.

Ryan Moore (68) of Puyallup was tied for 53rd at 3 under and ex-UW player Troy Kelly (69) was tied for 61st at 2 under.

Garcia ? whose second-round 63 marked his best PGA Tour round in a decade ? made a move with birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 that helped him leapfrog his playing partner, Clark.

Other tournaments

? Defending champion John Huston shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Brad Faxon (66) after the second round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, an event on the 50-and-older Champions Tour in Endicott, N.Y.

Huston was at 12-under 132 for 36 holes.

Peter Senior (67) and Willie Wood (68) were at 9 under.

Kirk Triplett (72), a graduate of Pullman High School, was tied for 42nd at 1 under.

? Mika Miyazato of Japan shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the LPGA Tour Safeway Classic on the Pumpkin Ridge Ghost Creek Course in North Plains, Ore.

Miyazato had an 11-under 133 total.

So Yeon Ryu (68) of South Korea was in second.

Ex-Washington Huskies player Paige Mackenzie (72) of Yakima was tied for 59th place at 2 over. Wendy Ward (76), who lives near Edwall, outside Spokane, was tied for 66th at 3 over.

? Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif., and Steven Fox of Hendersonville, Tenn., advanced to Sunday's 36-hole final of the U.S. Amateur in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
