Green Living: Go Green When You Remodel Your Living | Tabletop ...

Remodeling your living room requires proper planning before you begin. Once you decide the amount of money you want to put into the job, you must then decide the materials for the remodel. Deciding the materials is one of the most enjoyable processes of remodeling a living room. A full remodel requires you to focus on improving the air quality, circulation and ventilation, as well as improving the overall appearance of the room.

Air-Proofing for Better Circulation and Ventilation
In order to improve circulation and ventilation in your living room, you should consider upgrading the windows in the space. Swap out any drafty windows with new, energy efficient windows. If replacing the windows is out of your budget, consider adding foam insulation around the frames, and covering the windows with energy efficient window coverings such as honey comb shades, high-reflectivity films, blinds, or draperies. Not only will covering the windows properly help prevent drafty leaks, but it will limit sun exposure that can damage flooring, furniture and walls.

Promote Healthier Air Quality in Your Living Room
Painting the living room is one of the best ways to make the biggest impact. Changing the color of the room can transform the space from something bland into something fresh and beautiful. Painting the walls is one of the easiest ways to drastically change the space, however a lot of paint brands contain harmful chemicals that can be difficult to breathe and leave the room smelling for days after you finish the job. Consider using green paints, which contain little or no Volatile Organic Compounds. These paints provide a complete covering with very little exposure to imperfections on the wall. Not only do the look absolutely beautiful in your living room, but they do not emit foul smelling chemicals into the air. Low or Zero-VOC paints are safe to use in homes with small children or homes of women who are expecting. Once the living room is painted, you do not have to worry about the odor from paint stuffing up the home for weeks.

Recycle the Room
If the walls are not in terrible shape, do not tear them down. There is no need to put forth extra work to recreate a space. If you do need to replace the walls in the living room, or you want to build a new wall in the space, consider using recycled wood. Numerous companies offer recycled wood and materials at discounted prices, which is great for the environment and even better for your budget. Recycling framing around windows and doors is also a great idea. If you no longer desire the appearance of the existing trim work, paint over them with a neutral color Low-VOC paint. Check out local thrift stores for furniture and decorations as these stores often contain hidden treasures that other individuals do not want any more. With a nice reupholstering on furniture, or a fresh new coating over a statue or figuring, you can transform the room instantly.

New Flooring for the Space
Living rooms are often very diverse rooms containing floors that are exposed to heavy traffic. There are a variety of green flooring options to finish the space. If you desire to replace the flooring in the living room with carpeting, considered a recycled fiber carpeting to fill the space. Using carpet tiles is a way t prevent having to replace the carpet in the future due to damage spots. Wood flooring, such as bamboo or cork, are great options for the space. When you finish the flooring, use a low-VOC finish to protect the wood without emitting chemicals into the room.
